Toddlers: 24 Months+

Am at my wit's end (naps/bedtime and using the potty)

I have no idea what to do about this, so any advice is greatly appreciated.

Lilly isnt fully potty trained and we arent really even trying yet. We have a potty in each bathroom and she will go through spurts where she wants to use it a couple times a day or sometimes not at all.

The ONLY time she always wants to use it is right before nap or bed which is fine but it turns into going pee, getting in bed, crying to get out to pee, goes pee again, gets in bed, cries to get out to pee again. She will still pee in her diaper when she's sleeping so I dont think it has anything to do with her not wanting to be wet in bed but I really think she is stalling with taking a nap. She still sleeps for a good two hours every day so I know she's not ready to drop it yet. I get so frustrated b/c I know she is stalling but obviously I dont want to create any kind of tension in regards to going pee.

Today before nap was awful, she got out to pee 3 times, all the while screaming and crying about it.

WDYT?

  • my DD did this too, and i would let her go a couple of times, but after the 2nd time or so, i would tell her "okay this is the last time because the potty needs to take a nap too" and after she finished, we'd say good-night to the potty and i would explain that we can't use it again so she can wear a diaper if she needs to pee.  it was rough for a few days.

i agree with not wanting to create tension - it sounds like she's really becoming aware of her bodily functions, maybe try a 3-day potty training method and go whole-hog into it?  i found that once my DD was consistently using the potty, she stopped having these tantrums at night.  this is the method we loved. good luck!

  • This is us exactly right now. I actually just talked to the doctor about it because it was driving me nuts. Last week, it was 8 trips to the potty and she actually went 8 times. Just little amounts. We are also not trying to potty train her yet but she is fully interested but just doesn't always want to use it. We have tried panties and she doesn't care if she wets them either. Which tells me she is not 100% ready. The doctor told us to put a potty in her room right by her bed so she could use it during nap time. He is a firm believer that as long as they are quiet and in there bed then it doesn't better if they actually sleep at this age. We still have her in the crib though so we would have to do a toddler bed or real bed to beable to to put the potty in her room. Right now, I just let her go to the potty as long as she going. Once it stops then she has to go to bed.

I wish you luck, because I am right there with you.
