Juice vs Chocolate Milk

My DS loves chocolate milk with meals and doesnt drink  alot of juice. I usually put half choc. milk and half reg. milk. Should I be encouraging juice, is there more sugar in choc. milk or juice?

Re: Juice vs Chocolate Milk

  • I think choc milk is better of the two evils.  I just started to give DS pediasure and tell him it is chocolate milk.  It is expensive so i mix half with reg milk.  I only do it 1-2 times a weeks as a special treat.

  • Will he drink regular milk or water? Both are much better for him.

  • Could you wean her off the choc milk by gradually putting more regular milk in each week? I would seriously think about getting away from any sweetened drinks. As for juice, I would stay away from apple unless it's a more natural product. At least juice is a natural sugar.
  • I would say 1/2 regular and 1/2 choc is WAY lesser of the 2 evils.  I have no idea why juice is given to kids since they wouldn't know the difference if they didn't get it.  My pedi loves that DD does not get juice.  Stick with milk and encourage fruit(which I am sure you do since kids love it) instead of juice is a much better option.

Also, giving water instead of juice is much cheaper and better for their teeth.  :)  I think you are doing a great job not giving your DS a large amount of juice.

  • We have been giving DS Chocolate Ovaltine...I feel a little bit better giving that to him them Nesquik....atlease its supposed to have some vitamins and minerals in it...and I still make it half chocolate and half regular milk..

Ditto. Juice and chocolate milk are treats. DD1 became a total juice addict after I lost my milk while pregnant. I had had enough a few months later, and within a day of telling her plain milk and water were her only options, she started drinking water. She started drinking plain milk about 6 months later.

  • We do the carnation instant breakfasts with Monkey's milk.  Mind you, my DD gets up at 5am and needs it to keep the hunger pangs down till a reasonable breakfast time....

But if you are going to do a milk, why not one that has ALL of the vitamins necessary (olvatine is good, but the instant breakfasts have more vit, min and protien).

And this was actually suggested by our Pedi and I got a 2nd opinion from a NP who specializes in pediatrics.
