3rd Trimester

Hmm. Here's something I haven't heard before re: shaving

Today I had my 36 week appt and my first internal. The nurse said I should stop shaving *there* from now until delivery, to reduce the risk of infection.

I'm thinking infection b/c they know we have no idea what we're really shaving and are likely to cut off something important. ;)

So, there you have it. An excuse if you'd like to be done.

  • Yeah, I don't shave it if I can't see it anyways! lol. No big deal I'll deal with that one after she gets here and I am able to see it again!

  • I got told not to shave *there* or even the area on my legs close to it after 32 weeks because of infection risk. It was annoying though, and I shaved last night...

  • screw that! I shave and shaved all the time w/ my other two pregnancies and with this one and NO ONE has ever said anything like that to me
  • I was thinking about doing mine once more before delivery (only do it when I can't take it anymore). It gets so irritated though that I may not.

Yeah, that's silly. I shaved my legs, junk and under arms while in labour with both kids and will do the same this time around. Not all of us are blessed with peach-fuzz blonde hair.

True, but not all of us care.  I'll just leave the bush untamed.  It's really way down on my list of concerns.

I thought it looked so weird in knocked up when she was totally bald while crowning, LOL. It's the image from that movie that stuck with me.

  • I haven't shaved that for a while. I use clippers to keep it trimmed, but after getting a couple nicks the last time I tried, it wasn't worth it. I still do my legs/underarms though.

This is pretty much me. I shave my legs and underarms and use a trimmer on what I can't see (don't know how well it works, but it makes me feel better!) haven't nicked myself yet, if I did I'd probably stop too.

  • I stopped shaving down there the moment I couldn't see it any more. I figured that the doctors have seen worse - and they have! A hairy crotch is the least gross thing they've ever seen. They've seen severed fingers, other peoples' vomit on their clothing, they've been urinated on, they've cleaned up feces, they've diagnosed people with head lice, they've been spit on... the list goes on and on. And after childbirth, when my vagina was literally wide open and they were sewing me up, and I was exhausted and was trying to stay awake to see my new baby, the least of my worries was whether or not I was "spruced up" down there.

  • What sort of infection are you going to get? I've never nicked myself down there, strange, maybe because the skin is more pliable and not taut like your legs where there are bony areas to nick. After 3-4 weeks of no shaving I feel like a monkey... I can't not do it no matter how out of breath I get and how difficult it is!

  • I always trim with an electric trimmer and keep it nice and short.  I don't like to shave down there - I get major razor burn and itch.  I'll have DH trim it for me from now on cuz I can't see anymore.

  • I think it has something do do with he actual pushing process and it causing more irritation or a possibility of infection for you if you continue to shave. I shaved up until I had DS. My doc never said anything about it to me and my current doc hasn;t said anything about it either. I am still going to continue to shave down there.

  • I have had three different docs down there in the last 4 weeks and none of them said anything.  I'm not completely bald though just keeping it close and tidy with the electric trimmer.  I could not stand having all that hair after the birth and the mess that will ensue LOL

  • The risk they refer to is the risk of getting an infection like MRSA while in the hospital.

The infection risk actually comes from tiny cuts/nicks that you may not even realize are there. In the old days they used to think it was best to shave before surgery, but now have realized that due to those tiny cuts (that even non-pregnant people get, just from the razor) the infection risk is actually greater--it's the non-intact skin!  Even with a vaginal delivery the risk is there!

An electric razor it a little bit of a safer alternative, for those that are still concerned!! I, however will take any excuse to not shave, especially now that I can't see down below!! LOL

Me too and I'm not nearly as far along as your ladies. Trim is enough for now.
