Is it weird that I haven't peed in a cup for my midwife, at all?

I keep hearing of people doing a urine test at every one of their visits...or at more visits than not. The last time I gave a urine sample was when I went in to make sure I was pregnant. Now I'm worried that they aren't following up on what they need to follow up on. Do people typically give a urine sample at every visit? Or just at certain milestones? I've read about protein being found in the urine, and that's been a way to diagnose pre-e etc. Should I be concerned? Or not, since my pregnancy has been normal and healthy?

  •  With my first 2 pregnancies my office did urine tests by this point. I was shocked I didn't have to do that with my 3rd pregnancy. They said they only now check urine if the patient's blood pressure is elevated.

  • I'm not sure what's typical, but my office has me pee in a cup at every appt. This morning it was very difficult because my belly got in the way of me being able to see down there! haha

  • They started taking urine samples at my 33 week appointment, before that it never happened except for when I had my initial blood work and what not.

Each office is different. If you are concerned talk to your midwife about it.

  • I have to pee in a cup every time I go.  In addition to protein, I thought they were checking for bladder infections since an infection can cause PTL, but I guess I could be wrong.

  • I give a specimen every visit - it's the first thing they have me do. They even used the specimen for the GBS test.

If your concerned, just ask them next time.

  • I had to give samples starting at 34 weeks. Before that I don't think I ever gave a sample...maybe at the first appointment.

  • Yeah I have to give one every time.

And I'm glad I do because I had an UTI and didn't even know it at one point. It musta just been starting because I didn't even have any of the normal symptoms yet. So for that I am glad I caught it in time.

Same.  Just testing for the protein, I think.  If you think you might have a UTI, they make you use a different cup, with a lid, so I'm pretty sure they aren't routinely testing for that at my OB's office.

  • Every visit I give a urine specimen and have since the beginning. I would not be comfortable not giving a specimen because I had pre-e with my first pregnancy and I am prone to UTIs. Blah.

Me too. I get to do it myself though (they have the strips in the bathroom) and just tell them the results.

This. At my office they look for protein at every visit and also to make sure youre not developing a uti since many pregnant women do not even know they get one due to no symptoms since you are already peeing every hour or so. And untreated UTI's lead to kidney infections and pre-term labor.

  • When I saw the OB (up until 34 weeks), I did a urine sample every appointment.  Now that I'm seeing the midwives, they don't have you do one at all unless you are showing other problems (like high blood pressure).

  • With my first pregnancy, I switched to a midwife at 28 weeks.  I never once peed in a cup once I switched to the midwifery practice.  This time I'm back with an OB because my insurance changed, and I pee in a cup every single visit.

  • I give a urine sample at every visit.  I've never really asked about it, but I just figured the main thing they're checking for is protein in the urine.  I had a UTI during the first trimester so even though I don't have any pre-e symptoms I'd just as soon they test my pee.

ETA: I go to a traditional OB.

  • I have had to every time i visit my MW. My friend who goes there too does as well. I am sure every MW is different though. Mine said they just look at it to make sure its looks good and dosent have a bad odor.
