What do you use as a potty seat (if you do) at public restrooms? At what point was your child able to just sit on the regular seat?
Holly is pretty much day trained now (woohoo!) Well, we're a week in, in regular undies, with minimal accidents now (none for the past couple of days), and she tells us when she has to go, so we're well on our way at least! However, since we started PTing, the only place she's been is daycare, and a birthday party (where she wore a Pull-up, which she did not keep dry).
I am taking her out some this weekend, and am not feeling confident about our travel potty seat. It's like this one. I just feel like it's not very stable, and kind of ill fitting (at least on our toilet). Maybe I'm using it wrong. But it slid around, and it freaked Holly out. It goes on the front of the seat, right? (I got it at a consignment sale, so it didn't have instructions). Is there a better option?
She uses a potty ring on the regular toilet at home. Should I just take that with me? That's kind of cumbersome, but I want her to feel comfortable enough to go potty while we're out, so I'll do what I've got to do. Would it even fit a public bathroom toilet? She's definitely too small to sit on a regular seat at this point.
TIA!

Eli sat on the toilet in public restrooms from day one. I just sat him up there and he leaned forward and held onto me. It didn't take him long at all to figure out how to put his hands on the seat and hold on himself. Which for a boy is even harder since they also have to hold down their penis. But it really wasn't an issue at all, and it didn't creep me out. I just wash his hands really well when he's done. She is not too small to sit on a regular seat, I promise.
What do they sit on at daycare? Our daycare has regular sized toilets, they're just low to the ground. But the seat is the same size as any other toilet.
Does Eli just use the regular potty at home too? I just don't want to freak her out, since we're still pretty early in the process, so I thought she'd be more comfortable using something. But maybe we'll take a quick trip out somewhere and try just the regular one and see how it works.
At school they have a low, child sized toilet in the classroom. I'm almost positive it has a small, toddler sized seat. I will double check today (haven't been there since she's started PTing--DH usually does dropoff/pickup).
But that's good to know!
We had a portable seat and used it once. C hated it--it was really bendy and it pinched his bottom.
We used his potty ring until he was comfortable going potty. It was cumbersome, but worked.
One of my girlfriends would just bring her portable potty and let her son use it in the car before they went in to a store. She'd take him back out to the car anytime he had to potty.
I was at Trader Joe's one day and a guy had the back of his SUV open with his daughter sitting on her potty in the back. At first I thought, "how weird," but maybe it's more common than I thought!
John learned to go standing up early on so he would either stnad on his tip toes or I would hold him up a little so he could reach. For poop in public he would sit of course. He got a kick out of lining the seat with toilet paper before sitting on it.
One helpful tip - Keep a sticky note pad in your diaper bag. If you are in a restroom with those automatic toilets sometimes they will flush before LO is done and scare the crap out of them - literally sometimes! Use the sticky note over the sensor so it won't flush until you are ready.
Way to go Holly, keep up the good work!
At home he used the froggy potty, the big potty with a potty ring, and the big potty without the potty ring. He just really wasn't particular. I would just work with Holly at home to get her used to the different seats. If she freaks and insists on the potty ring, by all means use it. But I would try without it when you can. It made things so much easier that he wasn't particular.
We do have a travel potty we keep in the car, but it's only for emergencies. He really doesn't like using it. I tried to get him to use it on the beach last summer but he wouldn't. I had to walk him back to the condo every time
This for us too!
Our Thanksgiving Day baby 11/22/07
Pregnant with #2 with LPD, uterine polyp/hysteroscopy, DOR (AMH = 0.17), 2 c/ps
Our early Christmas present 12/9/10
Ditto this for us too. I lay toliet paper out on the toliet and then she sits (just makes me feel a little better with the germs lol).
And ditto PP's tip about the post-it notes and the automatic flushers! Those will really startle the kids!!
Thanks everyone!
I checked yesterday at DC, and it is a low toilet, but like Mikey said Eli's was, I'm now pretty sure it looks like a regular toilet seat. She went potty while I was there, and it looks like she has it figured out!
So as usual, I'm overthinking.
