Parenting after 35

parents of twins??

so they say that if you concieve after 35 you have a greater chance of having twins, i don't know this to be true in my life with anyone i know, just wondering for those that did concieve naturally after 35 how many of you have twins or know of people that did?

Re: parents of twins??

  • I know there are two ladies on here with twins after the birth of a singleton.  They inspire me!

  • I think genetics has more to do with it than just merely age.  Combine the two and you may have a higher than average chance.

  • me, me, me ,me  ::: raising hand :::

We conceived our singleton naturally after trying for 3yrs (I was 36),  I went on the minipill and **poof** I was pregnant within 6 months with twins (I was 37, delivered at 38).  SURPRISE! Stick out tongue

I'm sure the age did have something to do with it, but apparently so did the use of the mini-pill due to hyperovulation.

While there is thruth in genetics, that only counts for fraternal twins, not in identicals.  Mine are ID.

  • Honestly, I'm not aware of anyone on the later side of conceiving who has had twins in my circle.  At least not as a result of natural conception.  I know one where it was IVF with 2 blasts put in and she is pg with fraternal twins.

  • All my friends had babies after they were 35 as it is very common where I live. None of them had twins. I do know some people who have older twins and they had them before they were 35. So in my small personal circle, it doesn't seem true.

  • mom of twins here...

ID twins are a fluke- has nothing to do with age, heredity, etc... it's when an egg splits, so hyperovulation or just going off the pill, etc- no effect.  IVF with ICSI tends to result in more ID twins- they think that the ICSI weakens the eggs (it's when they actually insert the sperm and don't just let it happen in a dish).

And just to help you all out --- saying "natural" often upsets many moms of twins. All babies are "natural"....   wording can make a difference.... most MoMs like to use "spontaneous".... and it's really never OK to ask a woman if they were spontaneous or if they "run in the family" b/c that's basically the same as asking if she had IF assistance- which is never OK to ask anyone, unless you are very close and know that it's OK to ask... but in that case- if you are that close, likely you would already know about the IF assistance, if she was comfortable talking about it at all.

my twins are clomid babies - it increases the chance by about 10%.  I was also 35 when i got pg with them- but that didn't play a role.

there is a SLIGHT increase in chance after 35 for spontaneous twins- b/c the body tends to start spitting out more eggs each cycle - but it's still quite rare to happen... usually it's the other way around- that after 35 women tend to have more fertility issues and have assistance that results in twins.
