Toddler Rail... necessary?

I'm looking at cribs, and we want a convertable one, but I've noticed that some that convert to a toddler bed don't have a guard rail (not just buy it seperately, but that they don't make one). Is this something that you need, or are you fine without one? I'd love to hear the opinion of 2nd time moms.

Re: Toddler Rail... necessary?

  • We converted our crib to a toddler bed, but she wasn't ready for that freedom. So we waited and decided when we moved in May to get a twin (reg sized). We got a guard thing. I think it helps with safety and they feel a little more enclosed. She was ready for the transition this time at almost 2 1/2 yrs old. That is just what has worked for us though.

  • For my DS absolutely since he rolled, tossed, spun around, and did flips in his sleep.
  • Absolutely you need one...they do sell them for 'any' bed.  i'm surprised that the toddler bed doesn't have a guard rail.  That would be a big red flag for me.  Our convertible had a guard rail--in fact, I don't think it will hold without one.  We had to purchase it separately though.

  • Our crib also didn't come with one, so we bought a $15 at Kmart that fits under the mattress and is made out of a mesh material (Summer Infant Single Bedrail). We moved to her to a toddler bed when she was about 18 months old and used it and liked it- it still made her feel she was in a crib and she wouldn't get out of bed on her own.

When we moved her to a twin bed, we also used it, but took it off shortly after to change the sheets and never put it back on and she's been sleeping without it since (2 yrs, 4 mths). She's never fallen out of bed or anything, but her stuffed animals have and if they do, she will wake up shrieking.

  • My son moves around like a crazy man. The rail is definitely necessary. Even with it, he still falls out sometimes!
  • Our 2 year old is still in her Arms Reach PNP, but my friend didn't use one for her toddler. She just tucked the kid in with blankets. I've also seen these which I like more than the wooden ones...

  • The crib we got is convertible so when we moved to a 2 bedroom we decided to set up the toddler bed for our son, he was 27 months.  The company makes the toddler rail but you have to order it separately, but @ $75 we said forget it! We decided to try it out without the rail and decide if we really needed it.  My son fell out of the bed a few times but nothing bad because its so low to the ground...I'm glad we didn't spend the extra money.... If you decide you do want a toddler rail there are ones you can buy at BRU, etc. that adjust to fit your child's bed.
