Baby Names

Nickname for Charlotte... Carly?

So DH and I have settled on the name Charlotte Amelia Cooper for our baby girl, due April 21. (Thanks everyone for your input!)
I'm starting to think now about nicknames. I'm not a fan of Lottie, and Charlie would be cute if not for the fact that it's also the name of my brother's dog.
I've been thinking Carly might be cute... but do you think it's too different from Charlotte? Any other ideas?

Re: Nickname for Charlotte... Carly?

  • Yay. I dislike Charlie as a nickname, too. I do like Lottie. I'm not aware of any other nicknames.

  • I think Carly is too far of a stretch.  Why not just call her Charlotte if that's the name you like?

  • Char and Lottie are the only two I've ever heard for Charlotte.

  • My mom is a Charlotte, and her nickname has always been Char.

  • Wait and see what sticks, but I like Carly and Charlie.... I don't think your brother's dog is a big deal if you like the nn.  Char is the only other I've heard.
  • We call our daughter Charley, Char for nn's
  • Char - that's what I would use.

  • Char char (Sh-r) is what we call my friends` little girl, but I think it may have been the babies who started that...

  • I don't understand nn's for Charlotte because they're all 2 syllables and so is the name, plus none of them are as pretty as Charlotte is. My favorite is Lottie if I must choose.

Totally agree.  Charlotte is a beautiful name that doesn't need a nickname.

  • Charlotte Amelia is beautiful! I like both Lottie and Char.

I have friend who goes by Char...funny thing is that her name is Megan. In high school her name was so common that she told people she wished her name was Charlotte, and as a result all her friends call her Char now.

  • Charlotte Amelia is a beautiful name.  I don't get why people always want nicknames, though.  Why not just call her Charlotte?
  • I don't really understand people needing to pick out a nickname before a baby is even born.  Why not just let her be born and see what comes naturally to you based on how she looks, her personality, etc.

I think Charlotte is very pretty, much prettier than any nickname you could give her.

  • I agree about not picking out nicknames ahead of time, I feel like nicknames are something that just kind of come natually once you know the baby and their personality (unless its like my nephew who was named John because it is the 4th in the family but they knew they were going to call him Jack).

I mean your baby might be a total spark plug or maybe a tomboy and would totally fit the nickname Charlie, regardless of the dog, or maybe you realize Char is more appropriate but let it happen naturally.

To this day my dad almost never calls me by my first name (Shannon). He either calls me by my middle name (Elizabeth) or he calls me Peanut and he always has haha

  • Love the name. My SIL is Charlotte and goes by Carly as a NN.

  • Charlotte Amelia is beautiful : )

Had DS been a girl, he would have been Charlotte and I thought Lola was a cute nn.
