Are there any hospice nurses on this board? My DH is interviewing for a hospice job on Monday & I'm looking for suggestions on what to ask, what to expect, etc. He was a psych nurse, so this would be his first hospice job. He would not be home based, but working at nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Thank you!
Re: **davezwife** and other hospice nurses (not saif related)
I did hospice before I had Caroline...but I was a visiting hospice nurse. I went to patients homes, as well as nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
I'm not familiar with any companies that don't do home visits...so I'm not sure how that would work.
I would want to know how many patient their nurses normally see in a day, what type of paperwork, how much autonomy they have, etc.
Thanks, Dana316. They have one set of nurses that do home visits and one set that go to nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Not sure why they split it up...
Thanks for your help!
I would just ask what kind of meds they like (some places like to push haldol, others hate it. I HATE using it) um, palative care vs hospice, and the legal crap around it, the hours, and the TRUTH around the hours, on-call (and the TRUTH about on-call, lol), I like to know who goes to funerals... I think that says a lot about how the group feels about their patient load, and how they support them - we always made sure at least a couple make it to our long-timers services, to show support, I personally made it to a LOT, but I was close to many, it's how I rolled.
um, support things like music therapy, volunteer programs, and I always like to know something about the nursing homes - often the aids working there had patient loads of 20, and that just SUCKED for them. that was always hard to see.
Hospice work is a WHOLE other breed of nursing, and he'll either LOVE lOVE LOVE it, or go running from it real quick. He should not feel bad if it's not his thing. And I mean it. I got into nursing b/c I like to coddle and hold hands and stroke hair, etc. so for me, I liked it. (then again, I like being a bich and do psych stuff, lol. ) but he can't feel bad if it's not for him.
GL !
Thanks Davezwife! We're trying to figure out how to ask for the truth about hours & on-call...I'm sure the director will try to sugar coat it!
That's an interesting point about going to funerals - I hadn't thought of that. Hopefully he'll have time to meet with a nurse during the interview process so that he can ask some questions along those lines.
Thanks again!
