? for those of you who took metformin for PCOS...

My RE is telling me to stop taking the metformin now, since we got a heartbeat at our appointment today.  My husband, however, has been going insane doing internet research and thinks that I should stay on it till the end of the 1st trimester.  I never had any blood sugar issues, I just started metformin when we started TTC.  Any thoughts?  How long did you stay on the metformin?

  • I'm in the minority here, but my RE told me to stop taking metformin the moment I got a BFP.

  • I kept taking it until 8 - 10 weeks.  I too never had blood sugar issues.  Good luck.
  • I was told to take it through the 1st tri.  I stopped taking it at 14w.
  • I took it until the end of first tri.

  • I took mine until the end of the 1st tri. Are you Insulin Resistant? That usually has an impact on how long you take it. I am IR and ended up as a Gestational Diabetic. There is an increased risk for GD if you are IR.

  • I'm not IR and I'm on until 14 wks.  With DS my OB had me stop at 11-12 wks and with DD and this one my new OB has me stopping a couple weeks later.
  • With my first it never really came up and I stopped at 21 weeks.  If I get pregnant again I'll be on it until 14 weeks.  I'm not IR.

  • My OB had me on it until the end of my first trimester.  She had me step back from 1500 mg to 1000 mg to 500 mg over a week.  FWIW, my PCOS is not insulin resistant.

ETA: I did wind up with GD, diagnosed at 28w and change.  My OB blamed the fact that I was on terbutaline and a multiples pregnancy for the GD.

After 20 months TTC with PCOS, we were blessed with twins!

  • I took it up until I was 12 weeks.  Like you, my blood sugar was also fine, but my RE said there is some evidence of it protecting against miscarriage, so I stayed on it.  As far as I can tell, it didn't harm the pregnancy or my babies!
