is this tacky - birthday party hosting etiquette

I'm thinking about throwing a birthday party at my home for DS, who is turning 3.

Last year, I threw a party at a gymastics facility and there were "coached" activities for the children.  For this year, I'm trying to save money.  For  a kids activity, I'm thinking of setting up a playdoh table  with a bunch of playdoh colors and playdoh Sets, cookie cutters, etc.  This is something they can play with, with little supervision.   Also the kids would play with DS's toys.

For food, I would provide lunch and snacks.  I don't have any help so I want to keep the food low maintenance for myself.   I'd like the foods to be adult and kid friendly.  Here are the foods I'm thinking:

a couple packs of Lasagna  (use family size Stouffers Frozen)   Is it tacky to use frozen / premade foods?   I personally like Stouffers lasagna so that's one reason I picked it.

Meatballs  (Chicken Parmasan from Costco),  in an Alfredo marina sauce

Toasted artisian bread, with homemade bruschetta

various snacks, cookies, etc

  • I don't think that is tacky at all! If it were me, I'd make the lasagna...but that's just me. That being said, if I went to a kids birthday party and they served what you listed I would think it was great. :)

  • Please tell me what you think is tacky about this.  Using prepackaged foods? I do not think that is tacky. Tacky would be having no food... OR even tackier- ordering pizza and asking your guests to chip in. Yes, that is tacky. Offering "free" food, no matter where it came from, is not tacky.

If you want to save yourself more money and hassle, do the party in between meals (say 2-4:00) and just have a few apps, drinks, and birthday cake etc...)

There is no rule that states you must provide a full meal at a child's bday party.

  • Tacky? No. Though, I would be worried that it was very, very messy. What about pigs in a blanket or something like that? IDK, I just picture a bunch of 3 year olds covered in red sauce running around my house, but that's just me.
  • Heck, we had DS's bday party last weekend and I had it catered! Food brought in from Jason's Deli. We all joked about how awesome it was and how it was a good thing I wasn't cooking. LOL! The guests actually loved it. The only thing we made were the cakes and the kids' mac and cheese.

I think the food sounds good (although messy) and I'm all for making things easy!

  • No food you provide would be tacky, whether it's homemade, store-bought or ordered pizza. The only thing I think is tacky is when people don't provide any food at all for their guests, or worse still, only give candy out at kids' parties but no healthy snacks whatsoever.

all the kids parties that I have been to usually either have pizza delivered or cold sandwiches, not food that was frozen.  The birthday party that I had for DS last year was the first time I ever planned a party, and I had that one catered. So I wasn't sure about using frozen food since it's a first for me.

I think most of the kids in our group nap  between 2-4...otherwise I would have liked to do a party that is at a later time

pigs in a blanket would be a good food to have but  it would be more work than popping an entree into the over and I want super simple  :)

I thought about it being messy but at all the playdate potlucks we have attended, I have never seen the food being the cause of the mess.  the parents are all pretty good about helping the kids eat.
