What Should Be In My Pantry/Fridge?

I'm trying to get better about grocery spending. I tend to shop by what I feel like eating. Then, I end up with all sorts of random things and not a sensible "base" list of staples.

What do you always have in your fridge/freezer/cabinets?  For example, frozen chicken, pastas, rice, tomato sauce, steak, frozen veggies...what else?

Re: What Should Be In My Pantry/Fridge?

  • Our base supplies are milk and cereal, lol.  Unless I'm cooking (rare), it's usually take-out!  Horrible, I know.

What I like to keep on hand for DS:

-Beef-a-roni (quick and easy on the days DH and I just feel like eating cereal for dinner)

    - Applesauce

    - Fruit cups

    - Steamfresh veggies

    - Oatmeal

  • 1. ground meat or frozen meatballs - easy pasta dinner

    2. frozen chicken breast - throw them in the pan, soup or oven

    3. Potatoes - you can make salad, mashed, boiled, baked

    4. Pasta and pasta sauce (see #1)

    5. Rice - can make yellow rice, add some veggies in there, or team up with a can of beans (pinto, pink, garbanzo, black, etc) of your choosing.

    6. Cheddar cheese - add that in for a sheppard pie OR mozarella - whip up a quick baked ziti or lasagna, or throw it on your baked potato

The other things:  yogurt, eggs (breakfast for dinner), raisins, craisins, oatmeal, bananas, apples, Cheese sticks, honey, dried fruit, fruit bar snacks (Nabisco), canned fruit or individual fruit cups,  apple juice, OJ,  peanut butter, cream cheese.

  • italian diced tomatoes, chick peas, frozen veggies (especially mixed veg b/c DD eats it everyday with lunch), eggs, cheese, bread (we eat a lot of breakfast for dinner or soup and grilled cheese when we're busy), brown rice, smart pasta, frozen ravioli, pasta sauce, canned soups, chick broth, onion (I always have some of these in the fridge, they last a long time in there and can easily be added into things), frozen pepper/onion blend and tortillas.

    DS1 age 7, DD age 5 and DS2 born 4/3/12
  • Ground beef, Frozen chicken breasts, chicken nuggets, pasta, pasta sauce, frozen peas, canned green beans, granola bars, cereal, apples, bananas, milk, oj, cheese, lunch meat.

Those are the things we always pick up at the store, everything else kinda depends on what I feel like cooking.

  • Oh thanks. There are some things here I hadn't thought of. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your grocery lists :)

  • If "what you feel like eating" when you shop is actually what you end up cooking and eating, then it's not a bad thing! Making a menu plan is a pretty sensible way to shop.

Personally I would just try to think of 7 meals that you'd like to eat. Just make sure that 3 of them are things that can keep for a couple months like spaghetti and frozen meatballs, or frozen ground beef, mixed veg, gravy packet and instant potatoes to make a quick shepherds pie.

To me that's better than stuff that you buy just because you think you should have it. And if you buy everything you need to cook a week's worth of meals, then after a month I bet you have a well stocked pantry full of things you'll actually eat.
