traveling question - stroller

Annie and I are travelling to South Carolina in about a month.  We're meeting my parents there and going to my cousin's wedding.

Our flight is not direct; we'll lay over in Atlanta on the way.  Do you think it would be easier to travel with an umbrella stroller (allowing me to use it in the airport but have to find a place for it or gate check it) or have my parents buy the stroller in Charleston and meet us at our destination with it?  (They are arriving a day before us, which would easily allow them to do this)

Thanks for your opinion!

[Edit] My parents will bring the stroller back to CA with them and this will be the stroller they will keep at their house for when we come out to see them.  We don't currently have an umbrella stroller so that is why we would be buying one.

Re: traveling question - stroller

  • Definitely. I travelled with Emma at annie's age and did not have one. It wasn't fun. She wanted to crawl around on the floor (ick) and climb on stuff that was equally as gross. For $20 I think it's totally worth it.

  • I haven't flown with Andrew, but I can't go much of anywhere without a stroller.  He's too heavy.  I would bring it, unless you think you can carry her a long time without it!
  • Having just traveled through the atlanta airport (on our way to SC!) I can tell my experiences.

    1. it took forever for them to get the stroller off the plane (we gate checked it)

    2. because it took them forever, we almost missed our connection.  The Atlanta airport is huge!  We got in at the A terminal and had to travel all the way to the E terminal and that is nightmare if you are in a hurry.  Imagine a sprinting pg woman and daddy pushing the stroller behind.

Can't imagine not having a stroller. We love our MacLaren...However, give yourself plenty of connection time!

What are you doing for a carseat?  We had the umbrella stroller and checked the carseat.  Most people said they would carry the carseat though because they would be afraid it wouldn't make it.

  • I've only flown once with Tyson, but we did not take a stroller.  I used the Ergo and carried him around the airport in it.  It worked better than I expected and it was nice to be hands free while boarding and getting off the plane.  I just didn't want to mess with gate checking a stroller and worrying about it getting damaged.

I say let your parents buy it in Charleston and wear your baby.

  • Thanks for the feedback!

I have flown before with her in the ergo, and it's worked well, although it was before she was mobile.  She's still not crawling (though could be by then) but is definitely squirmier and wanting to explore.

Andrea, one of the flights I looked at had a 42 minutes layover!  It's barely legal (I think 30 minutes is what you must have, but I've heard horror stories about ATL) And the flight was only on time 60% of the time!  I ended up booking us a 2 hour layover.  It's probably a little longer than we need, but we can walk around (I guess more argument for having the stroller) and get some lunch.

  • I was going to travel solo with Kailey a few weeks ago but ended up driving but I was going to put her in the snap n go and buy a cheap umbrella when we got there to walk around with.  She gets to antsy in the snap n go for to long.

This way I wouldn't have to pay for checking the carseat, worry about what they would do with a checked carseat, I would have a stroller for the layover walk, and there isn't much to the snap and go for them to ruin.

I was just going to leave the umbrella stroller there. They are so cheap it wouldn't be worth flying it back.
