My dr has actually been checking my cervix internally at every visit, just putting one finger in quickly to make sure my cervix is long and tightly closed. I didn't realize until reading on here recently that that's not the norm for most people but I really trust my dr so I'm sure she's doing it for a reason. Then yesterday I had my first *real* internal. Little did I know. Two fingers and a lot more pushing around -- OUCH!!! Guess I have that to look forward to for the next 4 weeks. Luckily it only hurt while she was doing it, not afterwards.
Mine was literally 10 seconds of 2 fingers, a little pressure, and thats it. He used lubricant and it was super easy. I literally barely felt anything. I was like, "That's it?" and he told me the baby was low and my cervix was soft but closed.
Every doctor is different too. I had one doctor that was just really rough and I avoided him like the plague for the rest of my pregnancy. It's not all that bad though I actually looked forward to them!

Haha eww I just reread my post and it sounds so gross!!! I should clarify by saying I looked forward to them because I got to see the changes week to week.

It just seems like any other vaginal exam to me that you would get pre-pregnancy. No pain, no discomfort. Not a super fun time bc of modesty/privacy, but no big deal at all.
I had my first one (other than at L&D at 30 weeks) today-- soft, but closed; 50% effaced. I forgot to ask if the baby seemed low. I'm guessing not so much, considering how much trouble I am having breathing.
Both the ones i've had so far have hurt. my first pregnancy ten years ago didn't phase me at all. this one = OW! though after reading on the boards i think my dr may have stripped my membranes without telling me last week.
i had my first one two weeks ago and it wasn't bad at all, of course it's not comfortable but it's tolerable. Now the one I had yesterday, that's a different story. It was also with a different doctor because my doctor is out of the country, she made it hurt! I had cramps all evening last night from it!
For medical reasons, I have been checked almost througout my whole pregnancy. Average - once a month. Anyway, I have learned that it really depends on who is doing it as to how bad it hurts.
I found that the men OB's are the gentlest, I only feel some pressure and discomfort. There are three women dr's in the practice I go to and two are uncomfortable and the third has actually made me yell out loud it's so painfull. These assments are consistant - I guess pointy fingers or long nails.
Overall, excluding the one female dr - not pleasant - but not horrible either.

I've noticed that too! My office has 3 women and 3 men, and the men are gentle while the women seem a little hastier and rougher. I get that in personality a little too. They seem less compassionate than the male doctors. Interesting....
