How can I stop the early morning wake-ups?

I'm soo tired! This morning it was at 4:30. I think she's hungry because if I try to let her cry it out she shouts nana (banana) and ma (milk) over and over. Yesterday I tried to keep her up a little later (7:00 instead of 6:30), but it didn't work. She actually woke up even earlier.

After she eats we play (well she plays I just sit there blury eyed nursing my coffee) and then she takes a morning nap. She still takes an afternoon nap most days though. The books all say this is abnormal for an 18 month old to still be taking a morning nap.

I'm hoping this is just a growth spurt and once it's over she'll start sleeping a little later. Even 6:00 would be awesome!

  • DS is 20 months and will still take a morning nap 1-2 days a week. SO I wouldn't worry about that part...but as for the early waking..it seems like the early morning nap is more a continuation of sleep...so the morning nap is making it so she can get up early b/c she's getting the rest there. I would try to hold off on the morning nap and push it later and later so that eventually she's only on one...that way she will hopefully add the extra sleep from the morning nap onto her night sleep. GL!

DS was doing this, waking up earlier and earlier until finally he was getting up at 4:15 and wanted to be up for the day.

I thought maybe he was sleeping too much during the day (he would take 2 naps from 1.5-2 hours each) so I transitioned him to 1 nap.. now he's back to sleeping like he used to at night!

last night he went down at 7 and slept until 7:30 this morning! woot!

  • I was afraid of that. Sometimes the quiet time in the morning is so nice! We'll work on it.

  • I'd keep her away from a morning nap one day and see if it helps. She may be a little cranky until her afternoon nap, but it's worth it if it gets her sleeping more and back on schedule IMO.
  • Jack did that at 4 yesterday! I gave him a cup of milk, then put him back to bed.  He then slept til 7, which is way later than normal.  Can you try that/

This.  DS used to wake up at 4 and take his first "nap" by 6:30.  The Sleep Lady's book, Good Night, Sleep Tight, has a lot of advice for early waking.  One thing is to not let them nap before 8:00 am.  I recommend checking if your library has the book.  I used her suggestions to move DS's wake-up time from 4ish to 5:45-6ish.  Good luck.

DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
