I am a TTGP'er. I don't smoke, but my cousin just had a baby and is a serious smoker. She had trouble quitting for the baby (and personally I think she snuck a few puffs here and there). Anyway, now that she had the baby she immediately went back to smoking (and yes we've tried to convince her to quit).
She is breastfeeding while smoking....and it just seems "wrong" to me. My question for you ladies is, is smoking while BFing terribly unhealthy for the baby?
Re: "Can" you smoke while breastfeeding?
iv read that its not the worst thing but its not great either.. i mean you deff shouldnt be physically smoking a cigg while you are bf the baby but i dont think the nicotine goes into your milk etc.
i could 100 and 10 percent be completely wrong tho!

This item here would be enough to convince me to stop if I were a smoker:
Babies of smoking mothers and fathers have a seven times greater chance of dying from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).DD1: allergic to eggs & dairy
c/p 4/1/11
DD2: milk and soy protein intolerant, allergic to eggs, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, sesame, bananas

You can. Should you? Mmm... IMO, no.
She should discuss this with her pediatrician.
I once worked with a mom who BF and smoked and swear her baby had nicotine fits.
Why?
oh my.
So what you're saying is...it's better for someone to smoke and nuzzle their baby up to their smoke-drenched body, exposing the baby to countless toxins and carcinogens, then it is for someone to smoke, and have the option for someone else to formula feed the child far away from the mom? I highly doubt a smoker will take a shower before each and every feeding.
Please correct me if I misunderstood your statement.
Kinda defeats the purpose of bf'ing when you smoke eh
*taps foot*
I am waiting as well for a deeper explanation of Averysmom's thought process.
This is the opinion of the BFing gurus, LLLI and Dr. Jack Newman.
https://www.llli.org/FAQ/smoking.html
Dr. Jack Newman states "The risks of not breastfeeding are greater to the baby than the risks of breastfeeding and smoking. The decision is up to the mother and I would encourage her to breastfeed."
Okay. My husband is a pediatric pulmonologist, so he has the take on what smoke does to kids' lungs. Purely from that point of view, here are the smokers' guidelines:
Smokers should smoke outside, in a smoking jacket that they leave outside when they're done. In the bathroom with the vent does not count as outside. In the bedroom with the window open does not count as outside. In the basement does not count as outside. You get the idea. Actually physically outside of the house, standing in the elements. If the windows to the house are open, move away from the house to smoke.
Smokers should wash their hands before touching baby.
Smokers should wash their hair before touching baby. The smoke hides out there and can harm the baby.
If someone could smell smoke anywhere on you, you should not be touching the baby!
