If you were told to only gain 15-20 pounds this pregnancy

How are you doing sticking to that limit. I think iam doing okay I've gained 12 pounds so I guess I have about 8 pounds I could still gain if I need to and I probley will. I only eat when iam hungrey and I try not to eat to much junk but its hard. I actually just had my first ice cream craving last night for my entire pregnancy so my dh went and bought some for me.iam really not going to beat myself up to much if I do go over the 20lb mark and iam hopingalot will come off once lo is here.

  • Why would they tell you 15-20? My doc just said keep it under 35. 12 is nothing, I can't imagine gaining less than 20 though. Yikes.

  • I was over weight before I got pregnant by like 20lbs that's just what my doctor said at my first appointment.

  • I was told 20 to 25 lbs.  So far I am at 16 lbs, but I'm sure I gained like 3 more.  I'm not really worried about it but I want to make sure I'm healthy and the baby is healthy.  I will do what I can and if not, oh well.
  • I was told no more than 5 or 10, yeah right.  I have gained 12 so far and if I keep at this pace it will be 14 total.  I gain 16 with my daughter so I think that is pretty good progress.
  • My first pregnancy I was at a 15 pound weight limit and I gained 23. This time I am at a 20 lb weight limit and I have gained 15. I don't think I am going to make it under the limit. I am not that hungry and am actually going between losing and gaining the same 2-4 lbs over the last 3 weeks. I am not too worried though because I lost a lot of weight EPing my DS so if I can BF this time I think I should be fine. It's really hard to stay within a limit when your tastes change so often.

  • That's basically the mind set I've had I eat when iam hungrey and iam eating like I did before I got pregnant a little healthier but I figure if lo is around 7or 8 pounds then realistically the doctor only wanted me to gain 10 pounds that's crazy to me. Plus all the fluid iam not going to stress about it. And lo is measuring on track so I guess that everything is fine.

  • My head is spinning trying to understand how it's even possible. Something like 15-20lbs accounts for the weight of the placenta, amniotic fluid, extra blood volume baby and other pregnancy related bodily changes. I think I've gained 33, but all my OB appointments have been first thing in the morning, and I've been waking up pretty swollen and seeing the puffieness go down as the day progresses.

Anyway here is a chart with the breakdown of the weight of everything. I envy you ladies who have only gained 15 :(. I feel like a total cow despite all of the "You are all belly" comments I get. They can only say that because they haven't seen my butt and thighs expand slowly over the last 7 months!

  • My doctor told me 10-15 pounds is where she wanted me to be. I was overweight to begin with at 5'1 and 176 pounds. I lost four pounds right away and then gained so far I am at 14 pounds so far and she said I am doing great. I keep a food journal because wants to make sure I am eating enough. I definitly eat enough and I eat when I'm hungry I just try and make smart choices. I definitly have junk food every once in a while. My doctor told me at my last appointment she was very happy with my weight gain and that is has come slowly. I haven't really worried about it much. I just try and make healthy choices but I'm not going to starve myself or the baby. He is very healthy so that's all I can ask for.

  • If I go off those horrid charts I shouldn't have gained more than 2 pounds.  I'm up 21 and my doctor is thrilled at how smoothly I've gained weight.  I know part of the reason I'm up so much is because I was a vegetarian that avoided dairy in most cases for over 5 years and now I eat meat (no pork) and dairy so that change itself made me put on weight.  I was hoping to not go above 20 pounds but I have a fairly c'est la vie attitude about it as does my doctor.  I think being high risk he wanted me to focus more on what I was eating, less how much.

  • My midwife didn't give me a range however if I was with an OB i'm sure it would be the 15-20lb range. I have gained about 22lbs now with 10 weeks to go. I'm trying to eat healthy but it keeps on packing on. For now I'm just not going to worry unless my midwife is concerned.

  • My doctor didn't give me a specific number, but they were pleased that I stayed pretty level during the first and second tri. I was up 5 pounds total at my last appointment near the beginning of third tri, but I expect to be up more at my appointment tomorrow. My appetite has definitely picked up. And to be clear, I was overweight at the beginning of the pregnancy, so I am just listening to what my doctor says on my weight. As long as she is happy with it, I figure I'm doing OK.

  • I was overweight when I got pg, and my first m/w visit she told me that she didn't want me to gain any weight this pregnancy. Not one pound! According to most charts though it would be perfectly reasonable for me to gain up to 10 pounds.

Since starting the GD diet at around 20 wks I have actually lost weight since all junk food are off limits and I have to limit my carbs so much.

  • I started a bit overweight and was told that ideally I should only gain between 10-15 lbs.  I haven't changed my eating habits, just eat when I'm hungry and try to make healthier choices (not too hard since I'm eating at home all the time and we keep junk food to a minimum in our house).  I didn't gain or lose anything until right around 27 weeks and have now put on 9 lbs.  I haven't had any swelling/fluid retention to this point which is nice, and at my appt earlier this week my dr was pleased with the gain and asked me to gain another 5 in the coming weeks.  Belly is measuring to due date and I haven't had any problems, so I feel like I've been very lucky it's all baby.
  • I was underweight pre-pregnancy ... so I was told 25 - 30 lbs ...

I'm at 26 now ... at 33 weeks ... so I think I'm doing pretty well!!  I gained 3 lbs (must be the baby) since last week!!  i don't have any extra weight anywhere else on my body ... just my belly!!

  • If you're truly concerned about gaining weight, start a diabetic diet.  I found out about my GD around the 20th of December and have lost 7 lbs so far.  I'm not trying to either, but it just happens with the foods you can choose from.  I weighed 129 in the beginning, was 143 when diagnosed, and am 137 now.  I starved for about 3 days while my body got adjusted, but a diabetic diet is what we should all be eating anyway...

  • I was told 15-25 based on my pre-pregnancy BMI (29). My my 30 week appt, retaining a lot of weight, I was up 23 lbs. I'm still retaining water like crazy, and I've been gaining about 1.25 lb every week. I eat healthy (follow the Brewer's diet). My ob/MWs have never said anything to do me about my weight, except at the first appt where they talked about nutrition and told me to gain btw 15-25. If they're not worried, I'm trying not to be worried.

But I am super impressed by you guys who are staying within your range. I really, really wanted do!!!

  • I was told not to gain more than 20. Last week at my appt, I was 11 pounds. So, the Dr said I was doing good. I'm not going to beat myself up if I do go over.
