I always wait until the last minute (or last few miles) to fill up my gas tank. My mileage indicator has always been very reliable and tells me how many miles I have to go before the tank is empty.
I pulled into the gas station with it on ZERO miles this morning. It had 5 miles when I got home last night and the gas station is less than 2 miles from my house but apparently it takes some gas to start the engine.
I was literally praying my entire way there with my heart pounding because I had no options if I ran out of gas. I would have been walking.
Luckily I made it, but I'm not going to do that again for a very long time!

My dad and my husband would tell you that you'll burn up the car's fuel pump if you consistently drive it under 1/4 of a tank of gas. Evidently, the fuel pump needs to be kept cook by the gas in the tank (where it sits), and if there isn't anything in there to cool it down, eventually it will burn itself out.
That's the speech I hear EVERY time I get low on gas.
My mother has burned up 3 or 4 FPs in her lifetime, lol. I haven't so far, but only because they've scared me into believing them!
Oops! I get "reprimanded" all the time for that too
This. I burned up a FP back when I had an eclipse. It wasn't cheap either.
I still consistently drive low on gas though. I've been down to "0" miles a couple times and got gas right away. My mom assures me that there are many miles left after it says it's empty before you actually run out of gas. I don't want to find out though.
This was the speech I got from Ryan this morning! Along with condensation building up in the tank because it's winter and all of the grossness at the bottom of the fuel tank being pushed into the engine. Whatevs.
Thinking I might have to walk a mile+ in flats with no socks and 30 degree temps scared me enough.
