Dr. L

Question - I know you have done some lace, I'm having a really hard time. I find that I get lost in the instructions and miss some stitches, and then because it's not the typical knit purl, I can't figure out how to fix it, and end up unraveling it. :/ Does that happen to you? I guess I need to make sure I am knitting the lace when my husband isn't home, since he's the one that is always distracting me. It's driving me nuts!

  • It's a process, and it may take a few tries before you get it to work just right. The first lace pattern I did, I ripped out several times before I finally got going. And that Advent scarf in my blog? I ripped out at least a few days (some of them several times--Damn Day 12!) because I just couldn't get it. I went to a class with the pattern maker one day, and she kept ripping it out for me.

If it's not too complicated a lace pattern, you can sometimes "read" your work and see how you need to get back to where you need to be. Other times you just have to frog the thing.

I would recommend finding a lace pattern where all of the wrong side rows are just purling. It just makes life a little bit easier.

That first lace pattern I mentioned up there? ^ Still not done. It's super complicated (I have places where there are 3 sets of patterns to knit in different parts of the piece) and I refuse to work on it unless I'm alone in the house (which is never).

  • I don't feel bad then! The one I am working on is a wrong side purl which makes it easier, but I swear I keep missing a yo here and there or skipping ahead in the stitches. That lace pattern makes scarves and hats look so much more appealing
  • Just imagine doing this:

It sould scare the crap out of me.
