Postpartum Depression

A few questions for soemone close to me

I have a friend who is due to deliver in April. This is baby #2 for her, with her other turning three very shortly.

Last night she admitted to having full blown depression and possible bouts of psychosis. She was diagnosed with panic disorders and depression as a teeneager and has been unmedicated and doing fine for about 5 years.

She is seeing a counsellor, but I was wondering if any of you ladies were on something while you were pregnant that I might be able to suggest she bring up to her doctor if just counselling is not working?

Re: A few questions for soemone close to me

  • I was great during my pregnancy but after I developed PPD. My midwife did say that with my next baby we would start zoloft or something gentle that is safe while pregnant during my 3rd trimester. So I know there are some medications she can take. Make sure she talks to her doc because it will probably get worse once the baby is born and her hormones are all crazy. Wish her luck

  • I've always had depression/anxiety issues but never to the point I was on meds.  I saw a therapist only when it started causing issues in my mariage.

I got PPD after my second baby and went straight to meds because I have limited time and a toddler now.  I can't say how much better I feel.  I've heard they can be taken while pregnant too.

    Best of luck to her!!
