Baby Names

What are people thinking?

I'm active on Babycenter as well, and just checked it....low and behold on the front page is an announcement for a baby named Phoenyx. One can't help but think...WTFudge?! What is UP with this superfluous "y" trend? It drives me insane!

Sadly, while it may drive many of us bonkers, so many people are doing it now that in 10 years no one will give it a second thought. Blech!

Sorry, rant over.

  • See, I think it absolutely works for your daughter's name (very cute!) but some of them are just NUTS. And especially on boy's names!
  • Thank you! Although, my youngest DD middle name is Rowyn. Stick out tongue - Yet we say Row Win - Not ~  Row AN -

ETA - I have to agree on the boys names. That's a no no!

This. If DS was a girl one of our contenders was Addisyn

  • Yeah I don't see the appeal of superfluous Y's - especially with boy's names.

But I'm a stickler for spelling names correctly.

  • It does seem superfluous, but there are a lot of commonly accepted names like Sylvia and Lydia that are still pronounced the same when spelled Silvia and Lidia. So when does it cross into "superfluous" territory?

  • To be honest, I think it looks kinda trashy when people put in random y's.

Sylvia and Lydia are the standard way those names are spelled...it's how they originated so it makes since (not to mention, more aesthetically pleasing).

It becomes superfluous when you name your daughter Addysyn or Carsyn (you know, to make it more "girly") or your son Jaxsyn (or Phoenyx). It's one thing to have a "y" where it commonly is used, but to just throw it in there to make something "unique" is what makes it excessive and silly. It does work for some names (like PP's children's names) as does Lyla, but others are just over-the-top.

Pretty sure "Iyra" is supposed to be spelled "Ira"....Indifferent barf at the superflous "Y" trend.

  • Lol, maybe it was a kre8iv name smoosh like the other girl had...Phoenix and Nyx. Stick out tongue
