For those of you baptizing

Our baby boy will be baptized in our church (Catholic) sometime this spring.  For those of you baptizing, when do you think you will do it?  Also, if you are having a boy, do you have any idea what you'll dress him in?  I've looked around online and i'm not sure i want to go with one of the "gowns" even though many boys wear them.  I'd love to hear what others are doing.

Re: For those of you baptizing

  • Our baby's EDD is March 22nd and we're planning an early June baptism. My mom found our family's baptismal gown that like everyone has worn, so he'll be baptized in that. We just asked the godmother yesterday at our shower (she was one of the hosts). We are out of town because my DH is in law school, but we'll baptize our child in my parents' Catholic church where I grew up going and DH and I were married. My mom is supposed to be finding out what we have to do to register and whatnot.

  • I'm due Feb 8th and Lo will be baptized between 2 and 3 months after she is born. My grandma brought her a gown from Nicaragua when she came to visit for Christmas so it's a little different than what you see in stores. I have no personal experience with boys. But if my LO were a boy I'd probably dress him in one of those cute white suits that look like adult suits. I'm not huge on gowns on boys.

  • we're doing it within 2 months of LO being born. If it's a boy i'll probably do the little suits.

  • We are getting LO christened the week he comes home so family will be here, and we are just getting this and putting him in a onsie. But that's just us. BRU has some nice suits.
  • Our little guy is due on April 2nd,  I plan on getting him Christened either the last weekend in May or the first weekend in June. LO will wear the same gown that all of my my mom's siblings, my cousins, and my siblings have worn. I am Episcopalian, and my DH is not really a "church" person. He has his own belief and relationship which I respect, and he respects my beliefs and membership to the Episcopalian church. I just explained to him what it means and what it is all about, so he is cool with it.

  • we baptized ds when he was almost three months old.  I honestly can't imagine doing it any sooner just because of the sleep deprivation and trying to plan a gathering at our home after, etc.  I did not use a gown, but found a cute onesie type outfit from jc penney (NOT one of the baby tuxedos!) with a hat and shoes.

  • We'll do it whenever it's convenient - we did DDs at 9 mos and 4 mos, respectively.  And I hadn't even thought of what I'd dress my little boy in - I guess a white sundress won't cut it this time! :/

  • My baby is due 3/25 and I'm planning on baptizing him within the first 3 months of his birth.  My mom gave me my brother's baptism outfit and that is what I'll be using.  It's in perfect condition and it's so adorable and not a gown either!  It's more of a romper-type outfit but very elegant material.  All I need to get are the shoes to match.

  • We had Drew baptized when he was 3 months old.  I'm guessing this LO we'll do something similar (due mid-April, baptized in July-Aug ish?)

I would have been fine just putting Drew in regular church clothes but both my mom and MIL were surprised by this and said "you don't want him in white?"  I didn't really care either way and decided to go ahead and do the all white outfit thing.  We found a white two piece outfit (pants and a sweater) that was cute and not girly.

Of course it was a freakishly hot November day (75 degrees!) and Drew was roasting in his sweater.  We ended up taking it off and he was just in a white onesie with pants :-)

  • DS was almost 8 months old before we baptised him.  I was looking for a gown, but they were all very girly.  I ended up with a suit from Elder Beerman.  I highly recommend looking at Sears and JCP for outfits.

This DD is due 3/15, but we probably won't baptize until June.  I don't think I can get myself together in April.  May already has 1 Confirmation and 2 First Communions.  So, I'm thinking June.

  • We will be doing a dedication the first Sunday that we go back to church... We did this with DS#1 and I dressed him in a one piece outfit that was super cute.. It is made by Pixie Lilly.. And this time around I couldn't find an outfit the seemed warm enough for the time of year that we will be going out. So I got a simple white gown and cap for DS#2.. It is also made by Pixie Lilly.. They have very cute simple outfits..

  • We baptized DS at 3 months old and he wore the gown that my grandfather wore then all my aunts, uncles, cousins and I wore. We will do the same thing with this LO. He is expected 4/11 (c-Section to be 4/5) I am thinking July 10 for the date in the same gown, I did get a cute dressy outfit for DS to wear when we were back at our house for the party as I did not want anything to happen to the gown, I will do the same thing this time around

  • As far as outfits, I'm totally at a loss!  I own a gown if we have a girl, but I'm not a fan of most boy outfits.  DH and I moved to Virginia 3 years ago when he started getting his doc.  We're going back to TN to baptize the baby because it's where his immediate family and my mom live.  It's a lot more centrally located for the people out of town who would want/need to be there.  For convenience reasons, we're going to try to do it towards the end of the summer.

  • We're hoping to do it around 3 months. Since I'll be traveling every week for work (again) by then, I'm thinking about trying to do it Mother's Day weekend so I only have to make one schedule request to be home Friday - Monday (not leaving on Sunday for a trip). DD is due 1/27. If my mother-in-law can get my husband's gown to us we may dress her in my gown for the actual baptism and his for the reception or vice-versa.

  • DS was born March 16th and we baptized him May 17th. He wore a little white suit. I think we got it from JC Penny. Here's a pic :)

  • Yes, when the baby is a few months old we will baptize. I don't particularly like the little white tuxedos for boys so when we baptized DS we found just a white boys baptismal outfit that was really cute. There are lots of options out there but sometimes you have to look a littler harder.

  • We'll probably do it in May (girl is due in early April).

Ds wore the same gown I wore (and my brothers), my mom (and my aunt and uncle) and my grandma.  DD will wear the same thing.

  • We did it at 12 weeks with DD. Hopefully earlier with this one, but we have grandparents travel to deal with.

No matter the gender, baby will wear the family baptismal gown. It's almost 100 years old and every baby on my mom's side of the family since her mom has been baptized in it, which is another reason for doing it earlier - DD ripped it a little because she was moving her hands around alot. I think it was made from her grandmother's wedding dress.

  • Natalie is due some time in March.  We're going to have her Christened in May.

Natalie's godmother is a (very talented) seamstress, who is taking my wedding gown and making a Christening gown out of it.   If it had been a boy, she'd have done the same but made one of the little shorts suits which I think are really stinking cute!

  • We are having our son baptized this coming weekend (the 23rd).  He is just over 2 months old.

We are having him wear a simple gown that belongs to some good friends (their son wore it).  Underneath I had a simple white Ralph Lauren one-piece (long sleeves, long pants) monogrammed.  Very simple and classic.

I like the little rompers too (Strasburg Children has cute ones) but they didn't have anything online in my son's size.  I just didn't have time to go to the store (2 hours away).

For my daughter, we had her baptized at 3 months.  Her gown was created out of my wedding dress and is VERY special.  If we decide we are done having kids I am going to have it shadow-boxed with a picture of her in the gown and me in my gown :)

  • Our little girl is due on 2/27. We are planning to have her baptized before she's 2 months (I'm calling the church this week to see what I need to do to get the ball rolling). She will be wearing the same gown DH wore. MIL has it and since it means the world to her, she'll wear it for the ceremony. I figure when we get home, she'll be in something more comfy for her.
  • We'll probably do it around 3 months.  Sears has a lot of Christening outfits:

  • DS was born in June - we originally planned to baptize him in January (7mos old) because we chose to baptize him on my dad's b-day (for whom DS is named).  Unfortuntely we got snowed out so we had it in April.  He wore this: https://www.strasburgchildren.com/detail.asp?pfid=SBC00780

DD will be born 2/16 and I'm guessing we'll baptize her some time over the summer.  I actually really liked that DS was a little older and a little more predictable.  He did great and so I'm thinking that we'll get our schedule down first and then figure out a day to baptize DD.  Also, I will need to work it around family schedules so that I can be sure grandparents will be in attendance.

    DS - June 2009
    DD - February 2011
  • We baptize within a week or two of the birth.  Earlier in the hospital if there are any complications or health problems.

If this one is a boy, he will wear a gown.  My mother sews and she has made one that is a little shorter and not as frilly as my DD's baptismal gown.  I feel okay with a gown for a boy since he'll still be so young.  If he was more than a couple months old, I'd probably do a little suit.

  • We baptised DS at 3 weeks old in a gown that MIL made.  We will use the same gown for this LO, but I am not sure when we will do it because we are not completely happy with the church we are at right now and we may be moving shortly anyway.

Here is the best photo that I can find of his gown

  • we'll be doing it between 2-3 months old, probably closer to two months as the godfather will be in from his job overseas.  it's a girl, so she's wearing my christening gown.  before we knew the sex though, i was lobbying for a boy to wear it as well.  dh was against that and wanted to get a suit.  there's nothing wrong with a baby boy wearing a christening gown, in my opinion.

  • EDD is March 17th.  It will probably be around May.

My church is very tradtional when it comes to things like this so he will be wearing the gown.

  • We were just discussing this yesterday. We are going to talk to our pastors to find out what time frame is 'standard'. I would assume that we will do it somewhere around 3 months. I would love to do it when she is only a few weeks old because my Mom will be visiting from Canada, but I can not imagine that being a good idea.

Baby will wear my husband's family Christening gown. All boys and girls for a couple of generations (on his Mom's side) have worn it.

  • She's due on 4/27 but my family can't make it out until June. I can't explain why but I feel so anxious about getting it done as soon as possible. So I'm still not sure when it will be, but middle of June at the very latest. She will be wearing the family gown.

  • We will be baptizing in April. My grandmother has a gown that everyone in the family has been baptized in. MH was not too keen on using it if we were having a boy, but we're having a girl, so we will probably use it.

  • I'll be the Lone Ranger here.  I'm Lutheran, and typically we baptize as soon as possible, within the first few weeks.  Personally, my husband and I, with our history of loss, are choosing to baptize in the hospital the first evening I'm able to present myself half decently from bed after a c/s.

We lost our twins at 18 weeks to incompetent cervix and they each lived a few minutes.  They were born alive and were baptized.  NOTHING gives us more comfort than knowing that.  It sounds overly dramatic, I know, but we just aren't taking any risks with this baby.  Again, to us, it's not about the pomp and circumstance and history and tradition, but about the act of Grace that God outpours to us as our gift from Him.  I couldn't care less what he wears, but I did find a cute white cross Onesie that I will most likely dress him in at the hospital.

Just offering a different perspective.  God Bless!

I hadn't thought too much about what he would wear... but am definitely thinking about it now, thanks for bringing it up!

  • We're baptizing as well.  We're due 2/26 and plan on doing it the middle of May.  We are actually having christening outfits made from my wedding dress (we're doing a boy and a girl one since we are team green).  For our boy outfit it's pants, top, and a little vest and tie.  We're going with a traditional gown for the girl outfit.

  • We're planning the baptism for the first Saturday after we are home from the hospital, whenever that will be.  Boy or girl, we'll use a baptismal gown, which reminds me, I should start looking for one!
