What is your hometown "known" for?

food, sports, places etc

i think NYC is "known" for pizza, bagels, black & white cookies and cheesecake and as much as it pains me to say it the Yankees, nathan's hotdogs, the empire state building and central park

also feel free to say what you think other places are known for (these can be right or wrong, it's your perceptions)

chicago - deep dish pizza, hot dogs

philadelphia - cheesesteaks, rocky running up the stairs and cream cheese

new england - seafood, lobsters, clam chowder

i'm trying to gauge what other people think others hometowns are known for =)

  • Minnesota is know for it's snow/cold weather and the Mall of America.

People lots of time confuse us with Fargo which is in a completely different state!

Now I live in Spokane, and people CONSTANTLY confuse us with Seattle.  I get asked about the rain, and I roll my eyes and explain for the millionth time that it's the west coast not us that gets all the rain.  I'm not really sure that Spokane is known for anything, but it should be.  It's gorgeous here!

  • When I think of DH's hometown/homestate, Iowa, I think of corn fields, farms and small towns. (DH's family actually lives in Des Moines, so that's not totally accurate.)

When I think of Chicago I think of skyscrapers, amazing deep dish pizza, the John Hancock Center and shopping on Mag Mile.

When I think of LA I think of crazy traffic and high stress.

When I think of Mobile I think of AMAZING seafood and southern hospitality. Same with New Orleans.

When I think of Miami I think of drinks, bikinis and parties on the beach.

When I think of Orlando I think of tourism.

  • oh Chicago, how I love thee. We're known for our deep dish BUT - at every chance I get I tell people that every style of Chicago style pizza is different. Just because you say Chicago style pizza does not equal deep dish. That's my soap box. If I could die eating pizza, I would. Sad but true.

What else - our sports teams, da Bears, White Sox, Cubbies, Bulls, Hawks. SNL skits like the Superfans. We have a distinct accent, one that they train newscasters to use all around the country.

World class museums, hot dogs, Italian beefs, steakhouses, ethnic food. Chicgao is the best all around food city, bar none. Sears Tower (I refuse to call it by the new name), the Great Chicago Fire, shopping on the Mag Mile or State Street, our theater district and comedy clubs like Second City.

SC has brought you many, many famous comedians: Joan Rivers, Peter Boyle, John and Jim Belushi (also my fellow alumni), Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd,  George Wendt, Eugene Levy, Shelley Long, Bonnie Hunt, Mike Myers, Steve Carrel, Andy ***, Jane Lynch, Chris Farley, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Nia Vardalos, Steven Colbert...just to name a few Wink

Chicago is also a big architecture city. Downtown and both the suburbs. Some of Frank Lloyd Wright's most famous dwellings are in the Chicagoland area. Our elevated train the "L."

I could go on and on but I'll spare you, lol.

Where I live now...kids clothing. OshKosh B'Gosh. EAA AirVenture - The worlds largest aviation celebration. Surprisingly this little old town here brings in the major celebrities like John Travolta, Harrison Ford, Captain Sulley form the downed plane in the Hudson to the festivities. It's pretty cool but we leave town and rent our place out for the week for a HUGE payout!

It is also known because it is named after George Washington.  From the town website it says, "The story tells how Washington as a general came through the village and watered his horse at the trough which was located under the big village tree in the center of the village".

  • Upstate NY

Sir William Johnson made peace with most of the Indian tribes and made it easier for the English to make settlements. Also the native Indian's found Saratoga, NY and used it's healing springs for years before the English took it over and made healing spas that people came from all over the world to use and cure illness. He founded my hometown that I grew up in and helped much of NY with his work with the Indians. He also fathered 300 kids because it was a Indian tradition that a man of his stature was given girl each night when he was in a Indian village.....yea...... he also died of syphilis. Not all the things you find in the history books hehehe but if your a local you have all the real old documents in the library.

Edit added: Elizabeth Cady Statton is from my hometown and her and Susan B Anthony worked on a lot of the women's right movement and declaration in my home town. My dad's friend used to own the house that Susan lived in for about a year and he found lots of her old personal belongings. It was really cool to see them.

Albany  - Capital of NY although most out of state people think it's NYC haha, good pizza, peppermint pig, APPLE CIDER DONUTS (willing to ship them to you when they are in season if you like hehe), snow...we are known for lots of it, ummm nothing else I think.

Illinois is known for its capital, Chicago.... oh wait, that's not the capital. Wink

Ok, so I am from downstate and everyone just assumes it is close to Chicago. MOST of Illinois is known as being a vast land of agriculture. :)

    True dat.

I live in Normal, IL. We aren't known for anything because we are largely not even known. All of us Redbirds know Normal!  The best 4 years of my life were spent in Normal :)

This is awesome.  I am from Central IL and absolutely LOVE Avantis.  I flew home for the weekend a few years ago and took a gondola on the plane and probably looked like a total freak as I was chowing down!!!

Now I live in Minneapolis, which is known for ice fishing and the Mall of America.  It does get very cold in the winter, but I get really annoyed when people ask what the weather is like in August.  It's HOT!!!
