Recommend your baby carrier/sling

I didn't think I would want one of these... but my 10-pound, 3-week-old does have his days where he doesn't want to be put down and I can't get anything done around the house! Let me know if you have one you love, thx!

  • Love the Ergo!!

  • I have an Ergo, which I absolutely adore, but it's not the best for newborns.  This time around, I am also getting a Baby K'Tan ... which is great because you can use it in more than 7 different positions with baby.  :)

  • We have a Baby K'tan and an Ergo. I use the K'tan to get things done around the house and DH uses the Ergo when he needs to carry the baby around.

  • actually just met with a friend who is part of a group of women who are all babywearers and my husband and i got to try a lot of them out.  My favorite by far was the baby hawk.  This is a soft sided carrier that ties instead of uses buckles.  it is key that you try several on if you can with your baby to see what works for you.  several didn't work for me due to my size and it is important that it fits you well.  the ergo was too large in the straps for me and the straps rode up too high on my neckline.

  • If you decide to get a sling over a carrier I would recommend getting a woven sling. At already 10 lbs your LO would be out of a Moby pretty quickly. I am looking at getting a Didymos or something similar.

I also bought an Ergo but they don't suggest it for such a young baby.

Edit: Here is a link that someone posted today on the Attachment Parenting board all about woven wraps. Here is the section from that site about the different brands that they are.

As for brands, the big names are Didymos, Girasol, BBslen, Natibaby, Vatanai, and Storchenweige.  Here?s my thoughts on each brand:

Didymos ? These are the most sought after, and therefor the most expensive.  They sell many different fabric blends, as well as a ton of absolutely gorgeous limited edition wraps.  My Marigold and Cobalt Rouge Didymos wraps are limited editions, and therefor aren?t sold anymore (except second-hand, obviously).

Girasol ? Very reasonably priced, very supportive, and all around really nice wraps.  My Snow Rainbow wrap is a Girasol and it?s one of my favorites.  So much that I just ordered another Girasol because they can be thrown around anywhere without worrying about them.

BBslen ? These are the best wraps for beginners, in my opinion.  They are nice and wide, extremely supportive, and best of all, they?re cheap!  Great for buying if you aren?t quite sure if you want to invest in an expensive wrap, but are wrapping curious :)   All are 100% cotton, however keep in mind that they tend to shrink in the wash a bit, so better to order a bit longer than too short.

Natibaby ? I don?t have any of these, but I want to get one if we have another baby because they sell bamboo blend wraps that are apparently the softest things imaginable.  Other than that, I?ve heard good things about Natibaby wraps!

Vatanai ? These are the perfect summer wraps.  They are much thinner than other brands, and are super cool on hot days.  Some people don?t find them as comfortable for toddlers or big babies, however, since thinner wraps can sometimes mean they are a bit less supportive.  They are relatively inexpensive as well.  I had one Vatanai and I really liked it, but passed it onto another babywearing mama when winter hit and I wanted something warmer :)

Storchenweige ? These are super super supportive toddler wraps, but can be very hard to break in.  They are stiff as a board out of the box.  I have one Storch that I put up for sale because I don?t have the strength to break it in!  Those that love Storch?s, REALLY love them though.

They are fine for right away if you use the newborn insert. My son was 10lb at birth and we used the Ergo and it was fine

  • They are all pretty good in different ways... I have them all...

One arm slings (Peanut Shell)- very cute looking, good for the early newborn phase and breastfeeding while babywearing. NOT good when baby gets bigger, it hurts!

Mai Teis (Baby Hawk, Beco, etc)- also cute looking and good for bigger babies, more comfy than a one armed sling. Downside- some can't be used for front facing.

Wraps (Moby)- awesome for newborns and toddlers. The average toddler is about 19 months old when they hit 25 lbs (not all but that's the national average), so you get a LOT of use out of it. The best part of the Moby is all of the wearing options, allows for a lot of variety for baby's preferences. You can also breastfeed while wearing and you can use it for twins. Downside is that it takes a little getting used to how to tie it and may take longer to put on than a regular carrier.

Bjorn- good for men, they don't feel stupid wearing it. Portable, moreso than others, more comfortable up to a higher weight than slings. Takes 5 seconds to strap on.

Ergo- great carrier to have, especially for long wearing (trips to festivals, shopping, etc) guys seem to like it too. Not as easily portable as any of the other carriers. Probably get the longest amount of use out of this vs any other carriers.

I think that covers them all??

I don't mean to be rude at all, but I don't think this covers everything. Woven wraps are some of the best and most versatile carriers and don't even compare to the Moby. I found that the Moby was only good up until about 15 pounds with my LO, they are NOT awesome for toddlers. You are also not able to do back carries with a Moby safely which is something I love to do with my wovens. Also, I don't think that the Bjorn is a good carrier at all since it does not support your baby properly, and I don't see not being able to forward face as a bad thing with a soft structured carrier such as an Ergo ro Beco since it is not great for your baby due to overstimulation.  I find that the Attachment Parenting board is very helpful with advice and info for carriers, I would not have known where to start without them.  Here is a link to the site Becoming Mamas which I also found to be very helpful:  https://www.becomingmamas.com/why-you-should-avoid-crotch-dangler-baby-carriers/

I hope this helps someone to make an informed decision, again, I don't mean to offend or come off as being rude.  I just didn't know these things myself until recently and would be so upset if I was walking around with my baby in a Bjorn without knowing the possible harm it could cause if you are not careful.
