DS #1 gets there bizzare fevers...anyone else?

DS #1 is 21 months old and he started getting a fever again today. This will be the fourth of fifth one. He goes from being totally fine to have a really high fever, like 104, with in a couple of hours. They usually last for 2-3 days and are hard to control with motrin and tylenol. Meds bring him down to 101-ish. The first two times I took him to the clinic. They did blood and urine tests and said 'just a virus, tylenol rest and fluids' The last two times we've just dealt with them on our own.

Its just wierd b/c he doesn't really have any symptoms. No runny nose, sore ears, diarrhea etc. Just the fever and a bit of lethargy. Sometimes a little bit cranky but nothing to help up pinpoint what is wrong.

These fevers worry me because they are so sudden, high and hard to control. I worry about febrile seizures and other problems esp at night when I can't keep as close of an eye on him. DH and I are both paramedics so we do know how to deal with febrile seizures if that should happen but still...

Right now his temp is about 102, he's had tylenol and he seems fine. Just digging in the toy box, I just wish I know what was causing the fevers so that we could be a bit more proactive. Other than these fever and his hernia surgery he's never really been sick. Never had a cough, flu or ear infections or anything.

Anyone else deal with something similar or have any insight?

  • In general viruses are the best explanation for fever in children - even without any other symptoms. When you see a pattern of recurrent fevers you start to think about uncommon things like periodic fever syndromes. I will see if I can find a linky for you. As far as the febrile seizures go - do either you or DH have a history of those as children???

  • I completely understand your worry! I would be too!! I don't have any advice from a mama's standpoint but I did want to tell you that starting about the same age as your LO I ran really high fevers, like 103-104ish every now and then and never had any other symptoms of anything being wrong and I wa still playing and acting as if nothing was wrong at all. This happened all the way up through the end of elementary school. Other than those fevers, I was a perfectl healthy kid. Hope that's the case for your little one!
