Police & DEC just left my house!

We heard a loud gunshot practically next to our house and then a few more.  We called the police & when they got here they heard a few more.  Now its hunting season but not gun season so they also called in DEC.  Our drunken polish idiot of a neighbor was trying to hunt in the pitch dark and shooting in random directions.  They found him in the woods about 300 feet from our house.  He's under arrest for various charges.  Our shed has 2 bullet holes!  just 20 feet to the right it would have been in our living room!  To say that I'm freaked out is an understatement!  DH is beyond pissed!

  • OMG that is so scary!
  • wow that is insane!!
  • Glad you're okay (bet that sobered you up fast, huh?!)

But, I have to ask, is it necessary to point out your neighbor's nationality? really??

  • yes I do FFM ... he's known around here as the dumb polock (sp)  He gives polish people a bad name

  • OMG how ridiculously scary. ?I'm so sorry. ?Does he do stupid things like that frequently???
  • yes he does lots of stupid things but nothing illegal or dangerous before.  He's not very well liked around here.

  • LOL, that explanation makes it a lot better, Kristie. ?;-) ?I guess if everyone calls him the "dumb polock", it's all good.
  • Drinking, stupidity, and guns don't mix.  Glad no one got hurt, except your shed.
  • That is freaking scary.  I'm glad they arrested him.  FFM, my husband is from N MN and they still refer to people by their nationalities up there, it's part of their identity.  The Finnlanders have a special reputation and I have found it's very common to refer to that kind of stuff in casual conversation.  It seems strange when you've never heard it before, I don't think she was generalizing about all polish people or trying to be crude.
  • That is really scary.  But, going to have to agree with FFM (since I'm a "polock" myself)
  • It's a good thing that you called the police.  He probably would have kept going and hurt someone.
  • Piper, it was more about the use of the identification of nationality in this particular context. ?Like the fact that he was Polish had something to do with it. ?I just don't see what his nationality has to do w/ it at all (and "dumb Polock is, sorry, offensive in and of itself). ?

I guess it's a regional thing; where I've always lived, we find ways to identify people of all ethnicities and races w/o pointing those things out (especially in negative connotations). ??

  • I'm with Piper. ?My dad's family is from upstate NY and it is all about describing people by their nationalities over there. ?

  • That is awful :( Back off PC police its not always about being PC geesh

  • OK, kevschickee. He was a drunken Portugese idiot. Feel better now? Surprise

Kristie, I'm sorry this happened, but I'm kind of in shock so many people read this and didn't call you out. He can be drunken and idiotic, but wtf does that have to do with being polish? Would you ever in a million years say he was a "drunken African American idiot"? "drunken Jewish idiot"?

And to defend it by saying everyone calls him a dumb Polack? Talk about digging yourself in deeper.

Yes, I'm Polish. And I'm not mad at you. I'm just sort of surprised something so flagrantly offensive could fly under so many people's radar...

  • lol that would not surprise me sulla Im just sayin esp in my neck of the woods

  • sorry if I offend anyone but thats what he's called around here...everyone knows him as the dumb polock.  His parents are the nicest & sweetest couple you will ever meet with the cutest accent.  They are always apologizing for the stupid crap their idiotic son does.

Some people are just too damn touchy and if they read some of my responses to this post they would have known I was not thinking that polocks were dumb or whatever.

All I can guess, Sulla, is that people either weren't surprised or knew it was a losing battle to make a comment.  And judging by the last comment, well...

For myself, I didn't read this post until now.  And I can say I'm a little (or a lot) taken aback but I doubt that will make a difference.

my first thought was that his being Polish didn't really have anything to do with what he did or why he did it.  To call him an idiot would have been sufficient.  I know lots of smart Polish people.  I consider myself one.  I am sorry for what he did to your shed and I'd have been scared too, but his ethnicity shouldn't have come into play.  And I don't care if you live in an area where this is common. It's still not appropriate.

  • I also agree with FFM...since I'm a Polish.
  • FFM / Sulla, I am not trying to excuse it.  I was just explaining how where my husband comes from, they do the same thing.  I don't think you need to attach nationality/ethnicity as a description of someone but she did and I was just saying WHY I thought she did it.
  • UMMMM wow just wow. If he was black what would you have called him? I guess if you use words like "neck of the woods" and "Walmarts" there is no reasoning with you.
  • Yikes. The girl had a bad night, people. Lay off.
