Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Assume teeth, call doc, or both?

I posted a few days ago Riley is finally getting her first tooth!  We can see a corner of it poking through on the bottom.  Yesterday evening she was a bit crankier than usual, but slept fairly well (once we got her down, which was a struggle).  Forward to today - she is just plain crabby.  Nothing makes her happy but being held, I tried twice to put her down for a morning nap, which is usually super easy, and she just screamed.  DH called (I'm at work) and said she ended up not napping at all.  She fell asleep at 7 and was up at 7:45 and he said she has just been crying off and on, won't take a bottle (he said feedings were a struggle today) or any of her frozen teethers.  He gave her Motrin before her last bottle around 7.  I'm sure at this point she's overtired as well - I'm just starting to wonder if she could be sick or if teeth really cause this much drama!  I guess without a fever or symptoms of illness there's not much the doc could do, even if she was sick.  The only other thing we've noticed is her cheeks have been red off and on the past two days, but I've heard that can also be caused by teeth coming in?  AH!  I feel so bad for her, I can't wait to get home and cuddle....and apparently not sleep tonight.

Sorry for the ramble.  Any thoughts, suggestions, anything??

  • The day the tooth breaks through is HELL. I have patches on my head with new hair sprouting in because Matthew will grab it and pull. Do you give generic tylenol as well? We give Matthew both. I won't lie and say it did wonders but it did help him sleep a little longer

  • Emma is working on her first tooth (teeth?  I think both bottom ones are coming in at the same time...save me) and she was very similar today.  She took 3 short naps instead of 2 longer ones and was super grumpy and sleepy by bedtime. She naps on me, so I was surprised when she just woke up out of nowhere.  And the last few nights, I wound up pulling her into bed with us around midnight so that we could all get some sleep.  Even then, 2 nights ago, she cried in her sleep a few times, which she never does when she's with us.

Her grumpiness started on Tuesday night and so far she has been good tonight.  *crosses fingers*   So maybe there's hope?

  • DS's first couple of teeth were horribly painful for him!!  I think those were the 2 longest days of my life.  When he gets teeth now they aren't nearly as bad.  His 5th tooth just broke through today and I didn't even know one was that close.  He hated teething rings, but loved sucking and chewing on a cold, wet wash cloth.   Motrin also really helped him.  Hang in there!  I hope your LO feels better soon!!
  • I just have to say, our daughters ALMOST have the same name. DD is Rilynn Elizabeth and we call her Riley as a nickname sometime.

Good luck with the teething! I call/see our pedi over every little thing so if it continues to be really bad I might call.

  • I have 2 kid's one is 4 and his teething was horrible. I did the teething tabs (you can get just about anywhere) which did seem to help and I alternated every few hours with tylenol and motrin. He hated teething rings but a frozen waffel (blueberry) was a life saver, just watch out for when it's soggy because they can bite a piece off that would be too big to swallow. Also what I find that is very soothing to both my boy's when they are tired and just not quite there is I take thier baby blanket and worm it up in the dryer and hurry and wrap them in it and that usually put's them right to sleep. This might sound silly but the only thing they liked to chew on was the dropper tip to the tylenol bottle, I told my brother to try that with his little one and she liked it very much also. My second is 7 months and got his first tooth 2-3 weeks ago, I do have to say he was way easier then my first but I still had a few napless, clingy day's with him. Just hang in there it's going to get easier to figure out what works for your little one!
  • Grant was completely not himself when he would get teeth. Either he wouldn't sleep or would sleep a ton, or not eat or would eat a ton. Unless your LO has a high fever or other signs to suggest illness, it's probably the teeth. Hopefully it gets better soon.

  • Sorry :(

Sounds like teething, but maybe get her out of her clothes and diaper just to do a check to make sure the redness is only on her cheeks.

I was also going to suggest a car ride. Some icecubes in the mesh feeder bags were a hit, or frozen melon in a feeder bag.

  • Teeth, but I also wouldn't call the doc because she was cranky.
  • I wouldn't call the doc unless she actually seemed sick. Sounds like teething. My boy is getting 4 teeth on the top right now and most nights are pretty terrible with screaming. Once they break through it gets much better, but yeah, since we are getting four at virtually the same time (but of course they're just a short time apart with actually cutting through), it's pretty bad.

  • THANK YOU for all the advice and  input.  I'm not one who calls the doc ever so I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.  It's just a little unnerving when my baby who almost never cries and definitely never turns down food is crying all day and refusing bottles.  I picked up some Hyland's teething gel and it seems to be the only thing that makes a difference.  I gave Tylenol got her down at 11 when I got home last night and she was up at 12 (put herself back to sleep) then screaming at 1 so I tried the gel and she slept through to 8!  I used the gel again before nap time and she has been down 45 mins so far.  I'm going to have DH try it before her bottles tonight and see if it makes a difference and I made a list of all your other suggestions for him.

The funny thing is, the only thing she wanted to chew on last night was the dropper on the Tylenol bottle!  It made me laugh reading that reply this morning.  She's nursing fine so I'm no longer concerned about her stomach being bothered or anything, maybe the bottle nipple is uncomfortable?  Ah, who knows.

  • I'm glad the Tylenol dropper worked! I think the reason they like it so much is because it's the perfect size to fit in their little hands. I figured it was worth a try since all the kiddo's I know liked it. The worm blanket in the dryer really works too. I think that?s the best trick because it works all the time, even when they're not feeling crummy. The bottle thing might be the case. My oldest only liked the vent air Playtex bottles with the wide nipples and my little one only likes tommee tippee bottles with the wide nipples. You just might need to experiment to see what her fav is. Good luck to you!!
