  Good, question. I have been wondering the same things myself. Is it safe to use dryer sheets on the LOs things?

  I can't do fabric softeners on my kids' skin.  Adding a little bit of vinegar to your wash just before the final rinse works well to soften fabrics.

  This is what we do... Really clothing doesn't need to be softened.. and the less stuff you start with the better. If they DC does react you dont have to narrow down through tons of things to figure out the cause.

  I don't use fabric softener.  It is expensive and chock full of chemicals.  I use white vinegar instead!  Super cheap, rinses clean, and doesn't leave an odor!

  ETA -  i don't use dryer sheet either.  Wool dryer balls are awesome!  They quicken drying time, prevent static, and don't contain chemicals!

  I read somewhere before having my first that you should not use fabric softener on LOs clothes, sheets, etc. because it reduces the flame resistant that they have or something like that.

  We can't use fabric softener on DH's uniforms, so I only use the sheets on our blankets and pillows. (Mainly for the smell) I hadn't tried the vinegar thing, but hey if it's tried and true, I'd go with that.

  Not for the first several months- it would irritate DD's skin. We did get the bounce bar around 6mo and didn't even think to remove it before drying her clothes and she was fine at that point.

  Fabric softeners are designed to stay on the clothing. So even free and clear you've still got a bunch of garbagey chemicals on your baby's clothes.

  Dang.  I bought the fabric softener already.  I'll just use it on the adult stuff, because I can't return it. What's funny, is that I've never used liquid fabric softener.  So now I have it, and really shouldn't be using it!

  I will, however, try the vinegar thing.  It sounds gross and smelly to me, but you all say it works great and so I'll try it.
