Babies: 0 - 3 Months

having to wake for feedings

Currently, my LO is eating around 3.5 oz at each feeding, sometimes 4.  She is 2 wks and 4 days old.  I have to wake her every 3 hours to eat for almost each feeding with the exception of the one at night.  She'll wake me at around 4.5 hours after her last feed at night which is good for my sleep cycle.  Is anyone else experiencing this?

Re: having to wake for feedings

  • Has she past her birth weight yet? Our Pedi told us that once baby passes her birth weight we don't have to wake to feed. I don't know anything about formula, but when P takes a bottle of breastmilk she drinks 3.5-4oz and she is almost 6 weeks old. That sounds like a lot for a 2 week old to be eating, maybe she is just getting full enough to last longer than you expect.

  • Yeah, she is past her birth weight, but the pediatrician wants her to eat every 3 hours.  He also said he wanted her to be eating about 4 oz. each feed by the 1 month mark.

It doesn't sound like a lot for me. DS was drinking 3-3.5 oz at 1 week old. He's now at 5 oz at 1 month old.

  • Our DD was taking about 3.5-4oz at around 2 weeks. We never woke her for feedings except at the very beginning (first week or so, mainly in the hospital).

She is now 5 weeks old and takes between 4 and 5 oz. She will have her up time but also sleep anywhere from 2-4 hours during the day, and sleep 5-6 hours at night. (that is as of recently).

So long as she is getting 20oz or more a day, she should be fine. We average between 24oz and 27oz.

  • That is about what we average a feeding. She went quickly from 2oz to 4oz.

Like I said, I don't know anything about formula... so maybe it is completely different.
