how to avoid a bald spot?

i've been noticing that Elle's starting to have a bald spot. we always put her down on her back. sometimes even if i try to put her down a tad sideways. she still ends up flat on her back. she doesn't have a flat head though. during the day, she normally naps in the moby so she's not sleeping on her crib all day/night. any tips on how we can avoid the bald spot? TIA!

Jack got one, but it was very slight.  I really thing baby wearing prevented, but overall I doubt there is much you can do about it.

FWIW, J slept on his back with his head facing one side, we didn't have an infant seat and he never did take to his swing.  All of that probably limited the bald spot.

  • Yeah, agree with pp...I don't think there's much you can do about it. B even slept on his side most of the time (from newborn pretty much) but it still happened. Like MauiWedding, our LO never took to his swing (except 2 times) so things like that helped I think. He never was bald but he definitely had a thin spot on the back of his head that was noticeable. Don't worry though, it'll go away in a couple of months. I think by month 7, B had already started to grow back all the thin areas.

This exactly. Libby wore off some of the hair on the back of her head from when she was in the carseat and swing, but it filled back in and now you cannot even tell it was ever an issue.

Yes  I agree with the other ladies - there's not much you can do about it, unfortunately. Dash got a fairly impressive bald spot, and Will looked like we'd cut his hair straight across the back of his head (it had all been rubbed off in a straight line). It'll grow back. Smile

Yup, it's normal. Some babies get it worse than others... Carrying does help. Alexa had a slight one like Lisa described, a line across the lower back of her head where her hair rubbed off when she turned her head from side to side. It grew back pretty fast and she now has TONS of hair! So don't worry!

  • Thanks! Good to know it's pretty common :-). I won't do anything then. DH wanted to cut her hair to even it out. I said NO!
  • yeah unfortunately it's hard to avoid...we tried everything and she usually slept with her head turned to one side but the girl liked to turn her head left and right all the time when she was awake so she'd rub all the hair off.  her bald spot was fairly prominent but it did grow back :) at least these days it is ok/accepted, back in the day you got the side eye and even some day cares would consider calling CPS to make sure the child wasn't being neglected at home!!

Seriously? Indifferent Why? Did they think the baby wasn't being picked up enough?

Holy cow! Really? I don't get it. I remember seeing little black hairs on the changing pad and thinking, "is that cat sneaking in her and napping on the changing pad?" The I realized it was Libby's hair rubbing off.

yes, it meant that they were just laying on their backs all the time and no one was picking them up! pediatricians used to report parents for it! they don't do it anymore now, though, b/c they realize it's hard to interpret....

funny, b/c i remember feeling a bit embarrassed to take Miss A out in public with her huge bald spot... I mean, it was just not some mild hair loss....it was gone in one large circle and her head was shiny! i was worried people would think that we weren't picking her up enough....seems like i'm the only around here who knew about that perception? :P
