4wk old won't sleep during the day

I'm going nuts here.  We're on day 6 of DS not wanting to nap during the day.  I know he's tired, so I try to put him to sleep and he fights it and fights it.  Plus my 2yr old constantly being loud and following us around doesn't help...  So of course he ends up an overtired cranky mess.  Once I finally do get him to sleep, he's so overtired he can't stay asleep and constantly wakes up every few minutes.  This goes on all day!  I feel like I spend my whole day trying to get him to sleep, and I'm so frustrated.  With a 2yr old running around, I can't spend my whole day and evening doing this.  He slept wonderfully last night, went down around 10:30 and didn't wake until around 5:30 to eat.  Then went back down for another 3 hrs.  That's great and all, but I'd rather not have to fight with him to sleep all day long just to get that kind of night!  Anyone else going through this at this stage?

Me too!  I literally try everything.  I start trying to get him down as soon as I see his first sleepy cues.  He won't fall asleep in his swing, doesn't fall asleep if I wear him, I've tried rocking him in his RnP, rocking him in the glider, swaddling him (which he hates), white noise, walking around the room, bouncing, it's endless.  I try everything.  The only thing that works is turning on a hair dryer or vacuum, and even that doesn't work every time.

What is soo frustrating is when I get him sooo close to sleeping and then his little eyes open up wide like he is ready to start the day! He does this to me like 15 times a day. Don't know if your LO does the same or not...

Oh yes, DS does this.  I start to relax a little and think "Oh thank goodness, he's asleep" then his little eyes just pop open.  I think it's because he's so overtired, it makes it difficult for him to stay asleep.  Ugh...hopefully this is just a phase that our LO's will work through soon.

  • Hang in there you guys!  Helena did this too at 4 weeks!!!  Oh wow I could have written that post myself a couple weeks ago.  She would be super sleepy and we'd go start the "fall asleep" process.  I bundle her up, we'd rock and sing, dim the lights in her room, the whole nine yards.  She'd doze off in my arms but snap awake every 15 minutes or so and start screaming.  This went on for an entire week.  I remember calling my husband at work in tears and literally sobbing out "she WON'T SLEEP!!!  She's been wide awake for 6 hours, screaming!!!"  It was rough but I think it was a growth spurt of sorts.  She wanted to nurse almost constantly as well.  Hang in there and just try to keep your baby comfortable and calm and as exhausting as it is to do the "nap routine" when it doesn't come to fruition, keep trying.  They'll get over it at some point.  She's definitely back to napping throughout the day, but I won't lie those days were horrible.
  • We're right there with you. We've had a problem getting LO to nap since she came home from the hospital. I can tell when she's starting to get tired, but it can take hours to get her to sleep.

  • My LO just did this too. It lasted about 3 or 4 days but yesterday and today he's slept fine. I think PP is onto something thinking it's a growth spurt, L wanted to nurse almost constantly as well. I know it sucks but hang in there and your LO will be back to sleeping all day in no time.
