Oh how I wish someone would create a machine that could translate baby talk for us. S had turned into quite a babbler recently and seems to have full fledged conversations. Today, she crawled into my bedroom, looked me right in the eye and babbled a sentence. Then she paused and waited. I said something affirmative (hum, yes or something like that). Then I swear she said the same sentence again, paused and looked at me again. The look on her face was priceless - something like "well, what do you think?" - as if waiting for me to say something intelligent that matched/went with what she said. I felt like I needed to apologize to her because I couldn't understand a word that she said. Mommy fail already - lol.
Re: Don't you wish you knew what they were saying?
I know what you mean with that look. For me I never had a problem understanding DD. She never did ongoing babbling (as in sentences). For her it was usually just a word or sound at a time, so it was easier to make out what she was saying. She'd usually repeat something she hears & look at me & I'd say what I think she's saying & she'd nod her head or laugh. By the time she was 1, she said about a dozen words & about 6 animal sounds that I could understand.
Now she says a couple hundred words plus 2 & 3 word sentences. I understand about 90% of what she is saying which is insane. It's funny when my husband says "what is she saying" & I actually know. LOL. But once in a while she stumps me & I have that look on my face like I don't understand & I tell her I don't know, I don't understand & she'll keep repeating the same exact thing until I get it. Just yesterday she was in her highchair finished eating & saying "keener, keener" & me & MIL don't understand. Finally I got it, I said vaccuum cleaner? And she got all excited & nodded. MIL was pretty impressed. The reason I figured it out is because I usually use the dustbuster on her chair after she eats.
