Bad habit or okay because he is sick?

So, I always said I wouldn't let them sleep on our chests because I was afraid it would create a bad habit...never say never.  The boys are both sick and in great moods during the day but SO fussy at night.  We put them down and they start fussing again.  We fight through all night and then the last 3 nights we have given up around 4 am and just let them sleep on our chests.  It is the best sleep that they and we get all night.  It is not like they are so congested that they can't sleep on their own--I think they just don't feel well and want to be held.

Are we creating bad sleeping habits and they won't want to sleep in their cribs anymore or do you think it is okay to do while they are sick and they will go back to crib sleeping when they feel better?  What are you experiences with this?

  • IMO, all rules get thrown out the window when they are sick.  I actually co-sleep when my boys are sick.

  • We do anything for them when they are sick.  I think it's fine.
  • Luke has his first cold this week too and we've buckled the last 2 nights.  He ends up in our bed and he rolls until he's right up against me - it's the cutest, most sleep-distracting thing in the world but he sleeps better.
  • I agree with the pps - all the rules go out the window when they're sick. I always, always bring the boys to bed with me if they have trouble sleeping from teething, gas, colds, whatever), and it has never had an impact on their sleep when they're feeling better.
  • I agree with previous posters.  Sloane was just sick last week and I wanted to keep her propped so she could breathe easier.  I wasn't comfortable with propping her on a pillow in her crib so she came into our bed.

She has transistioned nicely back to the crib, no issues.

  • I think you need to do whatever you need to do to comfort a sick baby.  If a bad habit is developed, breaking it shouldn't be any worse than not comforting a sick child.
