DD has been spitting up A LOT the past few weeks. It seems to correlate with her increased intake with solid foods. At her last check up she was just shy of 6 months old and weighed only 10 lbs, 7 oz so the pedi suggested that we ramp up her solid food intake and give her 3 meals a day. Here's her typical meal rundown:
Breakfast - 3 tablespoons of cereal, 2.5-3.5 oz fruit, and nursing afterwards
Morning Nap - Nurse beforehand
Lunch - 3 tablespoons of cereal, 2.5-3.5 veggie, and nursing afterwards
Afternoon Nap - Nurse beforehand
Dinner - 2 tablespoons of cereal, 5-6 oz fruit and veggie combined
Bedtime - Nurse beforehand
So, a TON of freakin' food for a tiny baby. After she eats I have to keep pressure off of her belly for at least an hour or she spews food everywhere. So no tummy time, no sitting up, no bouncing of any type for at least an hour and she's only up for about an hour to an hour and a half after her feeding before her next nap. She doesn't turn the spoon down and is always "asking" for more food when she finishes what I've made, but she's constantly spitting up food.
Is it possible that she's overeating?? Any pressure on her tummy and a good amount of spit up is involved. (I'd estimate a total of about 1-2 oz is pretty average if she doesn't catch it.) She also makes gurgling type nioses a lot and I can hear her swallowing food back down. I don't think it's AR since she's fine on her back, but I don't think that this is really normal either. Any thoughts???
Re: Normal Spit Up or Something More?? (Kinda Long)
Well, according to our Wii Fit, she weighs about 11.5 lbs as of last weekend. And at birth she was 6 lbs., 11 oz.
What a tiny little girl!!! hahaha, I wish Annabelle had been that small at birth! She was 9lbs 7oz. hah
Is she teething? Annabelle has been spitting up a LOT. We've never had an issue and now she's teething and she's spitting up all the time.
Does he end the solid feeding or do you have a max amount that you'll feed him?
Oh I have to end it! He gets upset, but I look at the HUGE amount of food in the bowl and know that he is getting enough. It's as if he likes the act of eating more than filling up. I have tried to slow him down so it lasts a little longer- sometimes it works... I also now give him some cherrios while I feed him (just a couple).. This helps slow down the rate that he goes through his baby food..
She doesn't appear to be teething and the pedi has checked at each appointment for the past couple of months and said that her gums aren't showing any signs of teething getting ready to start. So, I don't *think* it's that...
I have to admit that I LOVE having a tiny baby!! She doesn't outgrow her clothes in 2 weeks, she still can comfortably fit in my lap and be able to lay across my chest. Of course, she's also too short for her exersaucer and her hands are too small to grasp some of the 6+ month toys that she has, so there is a downside to it. Hehe.
I haven't called the pedi yet because DH keeps saying, "She's a baby, she spits up. It's what they do." But he's not here with her all day and it's always a good 30 minutes to an hour since her dinner before he gets home. The pedi did recommend the 3 feedings since she's gaining weight so slowly and to feed her until SHE ended the feeding, but I initially was cutting back on how much we gave her to try to keep her from spitting up so much. DH was home for almost 2 weeks over the holidays and he kept pushing for more food since she kept asking for it. Our next check up is on the 21st, so I told DH last night that we would experiment this weekend and see how much she would eat before she ended the feeding and see what the results were from that. I'm hoping that it'll prove to him that she's not going to end the feeding as long as there's food in front of her. I hate the thought that she might eat herself sick, but at least then we'll know that she just doesn't understand when she's full.
Alright, so after hearing that DD is indeed eating a ton of food, I decided to call the pedi and see what's going on. The nurse told me that she does think that it's an overeating issue, BUT they want to see DD before they suggest cutting back on her food since we've had some many issues with her slow growth.
I'm not sure what to hope for now. I'm afraid that no matter what they see they're going to encourage me to continue stuffing the child. I mean, if she's still gaining weight slowly, I don't see them saying that it's alright to cut back. But if she's gaining at a higher rate, I'm afraid that they'll say that I need to keep feeding her the same amount because they don't want us to lose ground. I really hate doctors and those freakin' weight charts.
That's an idea, but she's only up for about an hour to an hour and a half after each feeding and I nurse her before her naps so I'm not sure how much I could spread. I'll definitely ask the pedi about this tomorrow, though!! Thanks for the thought!
