Does anyone have a list of girl names that have either no or very few nicknames?
I hate nicknames. I really do. I don't see the point of parents picking a beautiful name and people going out of their way to find a quirky nickname. My own name has like a million nicknames and people are always shocked when I tell them I go by my given name, no nickname. A while back, we had shared with MIL some potential names for a girl. She quickly came up with horrid nicknames for both. I know I shouldn't care what MIL calls her. But if she does it, chances are other people will do it as well. (And ruin the whole beauty of the full name) *sigh*
Re: what about names with no nicknames?
A few off the top of my head:
Pearl, May, June, April, Grace, Tina
i'm not interested in my child having a name and then going by a nickname myself either. but i think it's difficult to completely prevent nicknames. my name is erica which doesn't have really obvious nicknames. people called me "e" or "er" (more of a shortening) and then most of my nicknames in school and college were last-name driven. i am sure you can find names that don't immediately lend themselves to nicknames, and then you can continue to not propagate nicknames yourselves, but people tend to come up with things that you might or might not like. it's not easy!

DD's name and my own are pretty nickname immune, although my family can make a diminutive out of anything (ie, Anita, Amalita).
Anyway, the names are Anna and Amalia.
NN's can occur at any age.
My kids all have names that people could givenn's to, but none of them have NN's.
I never called them by a nn, they still even as teens do not have nn's. I dont think it matters what you name them, you just have to stick to your guns and not allow it!
I consider my name, Sarah, to be non-nicknameable, but I do have one friend who calls me "Ser".
I've found, though, that if people can't NN your first name, they might do it to your last name.
My last name is along the lines of Goldberg and an old boss of mine would call me "Bergie". But he also called most people by their last name.
In the end, you can't ultimately control it. But at the same time, if you do pick a name that someone like your MIL butchers somehow, speak up and CORRECT her. I have a friend who named her DD Tabitha. The one NN she wasn't thrilled about was "Tabby".
My FIL met Tabitha and immediately referred to her as "Tabby". *I* spoke up and said "Actually, they don't want her to go by Tabby" and he's never called her that again.
And to this day, at the age of 10, she is either Tabitha or Tabs. NO ONE calls her "Tabby".

that's my name too! Thought mine is spelled LYA (it's a family name, they live in Europe, not a trendy "y" name - haha)....and I HATE nicknames as well, probably b/c i didn't grow up with a nickname.
FIL drives me nuts because he's trying to nickname DD "KJ" which are her first two initials...first of all, it's JUST as long as her name & 2nd of all, it's UGLY!
Agreed.
My DDs name seems to be nickname proof so far: Hadley.
I agree with pp that you can never completely prevent people from coming up with a nickname. They will always find something! My name is Erin and I was always Er or Rins in high school and college. I also had plenty of friends who had nicknames that were completely unrelated to their real name.
I would just use a name that you love, regardless of nickname possibilities and try to reinforce that you prefer family members use her full name. Ultimately, your little girl will grow up and decide what she'd like to go by anyway so you can only do so much.

My DD is Rachel, and while Ray can be a NN, nobody has EVER tried to do it or shortened her name in any way. Nobody has ever asked "What do you call her?" or anything similar.
Now, *I* call her pet names .... but only me/DH. Nobody has ever called her anything but Rachel
