40 oz of water?!?!

Did anyone else have to drink 40 oz of water for your 8 week ultrasound and almost pee your pants waiting for the tech to call your name?!?!?!  i completely embarrassed by DH and mom in the waiting room while i stood there holding my pants up to my crotch so nothing would come out!  I was mortified myself!  Just thought it was funny (now that it's over) and thought I would share...the tech said it happens all of the time and next time, i don't have to drink the required 40 oz of water!

Re: 40 oz of water?!?!

  • lol, no!  Thank God! I think we would have all been dying too!

Mine have all been normal ultrasounds so I could pee right before and after.

  • I drank a lot before my 8 week US because they told me to have a full bladder.  Then I got there and the tech said empty my bladder because we were doing an internal.  I was thinking the same thing.  I would be so nervous that I would pee myself, lol!

  • i've never had an ultrasound where i had to have a full bladder. that being said, for my NT scan (i didn't have one last pregnancy) in a few weeks they told me i needed to drink 24 oz of water before. i'm assuming that's for the purpose of measuring accurately, etc. but i don't think it's common practice anymore to need a full bladder for a normal ultrasound.

did you not have a vaginal ultrasound for your first one? maybe that's why you needed a full bladder? although i don't know why they wouldn't just do a vaginal.

  • Stupid question but can you wear a pad after drinking that much water? cause I almost pee just from my commute and I go right before i walk out the door.. OMG that's going to be soooo fun. (ughh) lol
  • I had a vaginal ultrasound at 7 weeks, so no need for a full bladder.  But I didn't know ahead of time so I filled up on water.  When I checked in, I asked the nurse and she said that I could go to the bathroom.  So I did.  Then I got into the room, got undressed and had to pee again.  The nurses all laughed when I made another trip to the ladies room.  Exams down there always make me nervous and feel like I have to pee.

  • I wasn't instructed to drink any water before my 8 week u/s. Plus, I gave my urine sample before the u/s, so I didn't have a full bladder at all.

They did a transvaginal u/s on me, so maybe that was the difference??

  • AT my appointment before my ultrasound, they gave me some info and told me that I didn't have to drink anything. Even before going back to the room, the tech asked me if I needed to go :)

  • I was told to drink 32 oz for an emergency u/s. I cheated and went pee 3 times before the appointment. Guess what... made no difference. I have a bladder the size of a shelled peanut, I swear.
  • Sure did.  Your bladder has to be full so they can see what's going on especially when you are so early in your pregnancy.  I didn't finish my water in enough time and had to sit and wait 20 mins before being seen.

  • Wow! I only had to drink 24 oz. of water and I thought I was dying. I wouldn't have been able to handle all that water!

  • My office says 16 ounces.  I only had 10-12 ounces and that was enough for a full bladder and good ultrasound.  40 ounces sounds impossible!
  • My nurse told me that at her first u/s she had to pee so badly she barely even noticed the baby moving around, lol! She told me that one normal bottle of water (500 ml) is fine. I have to have a full bladder for my first ultrasound so I'll probably drink  about 750 ml.

  • In early pregnancy, a full bladder is needed for a normal (on your belly) ultrasound, but not a transvaginal.  It cracks me up that the range for "filling your bladder" is anywhere from 16-40oz!  lol... I think w/ a pregnant woman it's only a few sips!

My second u/s was at 7:30am, and I just couldn't choke down all the water - and I could see exactly how full my bladder was (the tech showed me).  It was about halfway, and therefore wasn't pushing on (or something) that side of my uterus, so it has really dark and hidden.  I ended up having to pee and then do the transvaginal, but that meant hearing the little HB in addition to seeing it, so that's fine with me!

  • I have had to do that twice before and it is miserable!!  I had an ultrasound to check my ovaries and make sure I was o.k. when I was checking for infertility a couple months ago.  It is so uncomfortable to sit for over an hour with all that water and then have them pressing down on your bladder as well!  This time being pregnant I tried to drink all that water and just as I was about to leave the house to go to my appointment I couldn't hold it all down any more.  I had to tell them that most of it came up when I got there.  My doctor was saying they do the regular ultrasound because you can see all our parts better or something than the vaginal one.

You couldn't hear the hb with the regular u/s? I did.  Maybe the machinery is different from place to place.

  • My u/s order said the same thing, but I ignored it.  I remember I drank however much they said to for my first u/s with DD, and I was in pain from my bladder.  Then, they said I had a tilted uterus and had to pee it all out and get a transvag u/s anyways!

So this time around, I did drink 20 oz. or so, and then of course, had to pee it all out and get the transvag anyways.  Then a few days later I was sent to the ER for spotting, had to give a urine sample right before getting an abdominal u/s.  So, empty bladder would lead you to think that I would need a transvag- nope, they did the abdominal and could see the baby just fine.

Never again am I drinking how much they tell me to.

  • What?! No, that's so strange.
