3rd Trimester

Baby has PAC/Arrhythmia/Tachycardia---anyone else?

I'm just over 30 weeks. Everything was going fine with Baby, no issues whatsoever. Last week, my OB used the doppler and we heard my baby's heart skipping and adding beats, and none of it was in any kind of regular pattern. She said not to worry, but had me see a perinatologist just in case.

We went to the Perinatologist today and he had a lot of trouble figuring out if it was "nothing to worry about" like our OB said.  I was under the ultrasound for close to 50 minutes, and I have been trying to avoid that for a while, lol.  It just so happened a pediatric cardiologist was there, so they dragged him into the room and asked his opinion, and neither one of them got a good enough view to say for sure.

They said that with what they're hearing, there is a high incidence of physical abnomalities in the heart, but it seemed like all 4 chambers were fine, but they didn't get a good look at her valves.

They want me to come in every week until she is born, now.

I am trying to be comfortable with this and have faith that it's all ok.  Does anyone else have experience with this?  This is my second healthy baby, and DS1 never had anything like this happen...

TIA, ladies!

Re: Baby has PAC/Arrhythmia/Tachycardia---anyone else?

  • We had to see a peri. at 16 weeks due to a slight arrhythmia.  The peri. said in our case it was something that was minor and should stop as the baby gets older.  By the time of birth she had no sign of the arrhythmia.

  • I am not sure what PAC is, but I have an arrhythmia and my aunt and my mother have  Tachycardia (super ventriclical(sp?) tachycardia).  I do not pretend to know what this means in a prenatal situation, but we are all fine! I don't have any medical issues. My mother takes  a daily medication that she MUST have and received a pace maker at 65 - which sounds dramatic- but she has had 4 children and a crazy active life. I cant tell you what it means for an infant, but I can tell you that it needs to be monitored but is VERY manageable.  Hope that helps a little!
  • Ivana, Mama-O, and SJG1---Thank you so much for your responses.  I know the best thing I can do for us is to avoid stress and stay healthy, since there's not a whole lot I can really do aside from avoid caffeine, which I already have been, to help the situation...It was just such an odd sight and sound to see her little heart beating, but not in any kind of steady rhythm...sometimes fast, slow, skipping a beat, adding a beat...Will let you know if it resolves before she's born, which I am still holding out for.

I appreciate your experiences with PAC and tachy issues, too.  The fact that most people who have these conditions seem to live full lives is a great reassurance.

    Thanks, again!
