i just got my bill from our NT scan and it looks like they used three separate codes for the same thing. they coded for the NT scan, sonogram under 13 weeks, and transvaginal ultrasound (they needed to get a better look). is this even ethical? (there is also a code for the blood draw, which makes sense to me.)
i totally feel like i am being screwed here. for those of you who had to pay a part of the NT scan, is this what your bill looked like as well?
Re: i need help re: NT scan billing
Wow, I find it crazy that insurance doesn't cover something like this. That sucks.
My insurance doesn't cover the NT scan either. In regards to billing for 3 things, yes, it is ethical as long as all 3 things were actually done. Sometimes things have to be billed globally, but more often than not, using more than 1 CPT code is what happens. For example, in my office, if a patient comes in for an epidural steroid injection, there are actually about 10 different codes that get billed for the 1 procedure.
You can always try calling the office to see if they can reduce the fee for you.
Makes sense to me - if there were more than one procedure done, then seems right that there's more than one billing code. The vag-cam is a different machine and requires separate cleaning, ect after being used, so I think it's reasonable that your doctor's office needs to be reimbursed for that. (Be prepared - when you get to the hospital, they will charge you down to every last pan you puke in.)
But if you have questions, contact your insurance or doctor's office for clarification.
thanks guys. i guess i was under the impression that i was just going for the NT scan and that code covered whatever they were going to do. my insurance company didn't have a problem with the separate codes being used and told me to call the radiology office. ugh...i'm not going to lie- i HATE dealing with health insurance. i remember this from last time and i HATED it then too. i think it's a combination of not understanding it all and not trusting the people billing me. it's like we (all encompassing "we"- patients, doctors, staff) are paying for the fraud/misuse of others.
thanks for your help.
thanks for this. we are calling them today to talk with them about it.
