Baby Names

Help! I have NO idea what to name my daughter!

My husband and I recently found out that we are having a baby girl. As thrilled as I am to have a daughter, we have NO idea what to name her! My family is Catholic and traditional, with a modern flair. I am looking for suggestions that are feminine (I am almost 6 feet tall, and am afraid that she might be teased if her name is "Sam" and shes "big") and also have a Saint affiliation. I have been on countless baby name websites and just can't find anything!

Please help!

I have included a list of the names we are (kind of) considering.

Emelia (nn Emmie)
Abigail (although it is VERY popular, it has a wonderful meaning)
Allison (Allie)
Katherine (Katie-although my husband's cousins all married 3 different Katies!)
Elizabeth (although I do not like ANY of the nn's)
Cecilia (nn Cece)

We like "Traditional"  names that have modern nicknames. Our name for a boy (if we would have had one) would have been Davis Christopher.

Our last name begins with D and is very common, almost like Smith or Jones. To complicate things more, my middle name is Elizabeth- after my maternal grandmother. I know my mom would LOVE to have the baby's middle name be after her. Unfortunately, her name is Denise. To make matter's worse, her middle name is Cheryl. I am leaning towards the name Allie Denise D, but then her initials would be ADD!!!

I am open to ANY name suggestions. Thanks!!!

  • Theresa or Teresa- Was a saint and has a lovely nn, Tess or Tessa.

  • Just from reading the first paragraph, Cece (Cecelia) popped in my head.  The patron Saint of music!! (I'm a music teacher so I automatically love it :-)  I absolutely love the name and nickname.  I think Cecelia is a really beautiful name and Cece is really cute.  Also, the link below has a lot of great names- you have to scroll down, not just look at the first list

  • Thanks for the suggestions! I love the name Cecilia, too. The only problem is the meaning, which is "Blind of Self Beauty." Not horrible, but not great....

  • I love Abigail.  It's very sweet and will age well.  I don't think that the "ADD" initials are an issue at all.

Cecilia would be my second choice.  Cece is darling.

I wouldn't use Elizabeth if you dislike all the nicknames.  At some point your child might very well want to use a nickname.

Emelia is cute but it is likely to get mixed up with the more common Amelia.

I really like Katherine but I wouldn't like how common it is in your family.

I'm not a big fan of Allison.  I think Alicia, Alice or Alyssa all sound more feminine.  I wouldn't use Allie as a stand alone name because it may not age well.

Suggestions - Hannah, Claire, Teresa (Reese/Resa), Anastasia (Sasha), Isabel (Belle), Genevieve (Evie), Helena (Nell), Gwendolyn (Gwen/Wendy), Victoria (Rori), Madeline (Maddy), Lydia, Josephine (Josie)

  • I looked up "women saints" on catholic.org

    I like:

    Matilda

    Lucy

    Edith

    Genevieve

    Rose

    Georgia

    Laura

    Tabitha

    Rita

    Rosalia

    Emma

    Margaret

  • I love Cecilia, so I vote for that one.

I like Cecilia! I don't think the meaning is bad at all. It means that she's not vain, which is a great attribute and very indicative of saintly behavior if that's what you're going for. I'm Catholic too and I completely understand!
