With ds, I was in the hospital for two weeks prior to delivery because I was only 32 weeks when my water broke. So I ended up delivering at 34 weeks. I had him at 11:30pm and since he was staying in the NICU for a couple days, I went home at 1130pm the next night.
When I had dd, I got to the hospital at about 6pm and she was born about 6am. I stayed all that day and left the next morning.
I can't seem to get out of there fast enought. I know first time moms might want to stay a little longer to get used to things but I get antsy with the kids at home. Although, this time I might be a little longer because I am having my tubes tied during my hospital stay, whenever they get an OR free and have a chance between deliveries.
I just don't like being there. They will let me leave four hours after delivery but they do not discharge the baby until he is 24 hours old because of state mandatory new born screenings. I wouldn't leave the baby there by himself so we just go home ASAP after he is 24 hours old.
Re: How long do you stay?
With kiddo I stayed 24 hours after birth as that was the soonest they'd let him go. This time, we are at a free standing birth center. As long as everything looks good with us, we can leave 4 hours after birth (you do get a home visit the next day).
I'm all about getting home ASAP ;-)

With my son I had him just before 2pm on the Saturday and we were both discharged by 11am the next day, so not quite 24 hours. The hospital I'm delivering at apparently has the busiest L&D in the province, so I wouldn't be surprised if they'd like to get me out of there ASAP so my bed can go to someone else. I think I'm okay with that, provided everything goes smoothly and I have a rather non-eventful vaginal delivery like the first time.

Things to avoid during pregnancy: Eye contact with cats. Cats will suck the burgeoning life right out of you, using their infamous feline mind-powers. Avert your eyes, and move along.
FACT: 1 in 10 people are said to be a carrier of Listeria. Therefore you should avoid all shopping malls, grocery stores and busy street corners for the duration of your pregnancy. Or microwave anyone you contact until steaming, just to be safe.
Well with both my son and daughter births I stayed the day I gave birth, the whole next day and then got out the next day. IDK I didn't ask to be dismissed earlier or even if they would let us not sure. Just what happened to me. (that was with a normal vaginial birth, w/ no complications)
With DS I got there a little after 1am and he was born at 3:30pm. We stayed that night and then went home late afternoon the next day. DH was really pushing to get us out ASAP, but I was nervous about being completely responsible for him!
This time the hospital has a no children policy so I will be missing my DS and wanting to introduce him to his little sister so I think I will be the one gunning to leave ASAP.

L was born at 4:42pm on a Tuesday & we left for home Thursday morning. I diidn't mind being in the hospital 2 nights; like one of the pp said, once you are home, you are definitely on your own!
I had severe hemorraging 1 week post-pardum; had to call the ambulance, spend all day in the ER, 2 blood transfusions, the whole deal. So with that being said, I am definitely planning on staying the full 48 hours in the hospital (& longer if needed) - just to ensure that I don't have issues with hemoragging again.
It would be great to get out earlier - but from my past experience I will just hang out & wait & see what happens.
