Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Car Seat bar question

Question/opinion for you guys --

When driving, do you keep your baby's car seat handle in front where he/she can see it/the toys, or do you push it back behind them during travel?

I thought you were supposed to push it back, but I feel like I see people all the time keep it where baby can see the dangling toys. Doesn't mean that's right, but I've done it a few times now, and it sure makes car travel more entertaining for baby...

Thoughts?

Re: Car Seat bar question

  • I push it back. As soon as DD is in her car seat she falls asleep. It doesn't go very far forward though, so if I did hang anything off of it, they would be right in DD's face.

  • We do both, but we don't have toys hanging from the bar all the time.  We have a mirror that allows me to see DS's face in my rear view mirror while I'm driving and sometimes the bar gets in the way.  We need to reposition the mirror, but for now we put it back.  I think that if you have toys on the bar, keep it up so LO can play with them!  Smile
  • If I am going a short distance then I keep the bar up - especially if I have to get him out of the car again. If I am traveling though for more than 10 minutes or so then I push the bar back. I didn't start doing that though until he was about 3 months or so, bc I'm pretty sure you are supposed to push the bar back.
  • I would check the manual that came with your car seat. Regardless of the entertainment value for your baby it's unsafe in the case of a accident to not have it in the right position.

in the handbook of my carseat it says its fine to leave it up since it's also made to collapse in the event of an accident.

Awesome! Thanks. I will have to check mine, but I'd assume they all have the same requirements. We have the snugride.

  • I either keep it all the way up or all the way down. I am pretty sure my manual said those are the only two safe options for driving.

I have the sungride also and when my seat was inspected, the techs said it was fine to leave it up.

  • When I had our car seat inspected by the highway patrol, he told me to always put the bar down. In case of a roll over accident the bar could collapse and injure the baby.

Same here and we have a Snugride, too.

This..We had ours inspected before we left the hospital. They said it should be all the way down.

  • The Chicco Keyfit manual says any locked position is fine I believe.
  • Decided to go to the source... According to the Graco manual, the only positions that you should NOT use in the car are "B & C" - so basically, all the way up or all the way back!
