WDYT of the name Admiral?

My DH loves the name Admiral.  It would be Admiral Charles.  He says, "Most people have to work their entire lives to get that name - our kid could be born with it!"

I HATE it.  I think it's absolutely awful and would set our child up for a lifetime of teasing and not being taken seriously.  I'd never even consider it.  However, my DH wanted me to post the name here and find out what people thought.  He says I'd be surprised by how many people like it.

So, WDYT of Admiral?

  • my uncle has a cat named General and another name Admiral.

My dads nn for a friend was "The Admiral"

    I hate it.

  • I agree, you are setting your child up for constant teasing.  I think it makes a good pet name!

  • Your DH does understand that naming a kid Doctor is no substitute for medical school, right?

The worst thing about this name is the relentless crap he would get if he ever really wanted to join the Navy.

  • It's horrible.
  • I think it's horrible.

I think your husband is going to be the one surprised by the responses you will get here. Wink

  • Hate it!  It is a military rank not a name.

  • horrendous, unless he were to become an admiral in which case he could be Admiral Admiral.  THAT would be cool.  But unless he can guarantee that, no flipping way.
  • I think of a knock off brand of spiced rum that is supposed to be like Captain Morgan called  "The Admiral"
  • It's horrible. Absolutely horrible. If you MUST use Admiral, it should only go in the middle name spot, paired with a real first name like Charles.
  • Heck to the no.

  • You are right. Your husband is wrong.

I think it would be cool on a pet, though.

  • No. Just, no. I'd tell him to change his name to Admiral instea

Does he think Doctor or Captain or Pilot or Teacher or Mister are good names for children? If not, then to me, Admiral is also not okay. If he DOES like those kinds of names, maybe try to steer him in an occupational (but still accepted as a given name) name direction, like Archer or Schuyler. In either case- Admiral? No.

  • You are naming a child, not playing a joke on someone. AWFUL!!!!!

Yeah, I've seen this line before...it's a punchline not a good reason to give your child a name that will garner teasing and incredulous looks for the rest of his life. And since most kids outlive their parents, he'd be stuck with it after you're gone...that's a crappy inheritance.

  • Mmmmm, nope.  If it was a family things, like maybe everyone always called his late Grandfather "Admiral," I MIGHT humor DH and consider it as a middle name, but for a whim DH could forget it.

Agreed, and when the kid is older and you tell him how get got his name, he can laugh at his dad and thank his mom.

Ha!  This comment reminds me of the character from Catch-22 whose name was Major Major Major and whose rank was (you guessed it) Major.

NO NO NO  Why not just name him MAN so he doesn't have to work through childhood and adolescence?

I think you don't have to worry that hell push for this name after seeing the responses here!

  • I mentioned this one to my DH, who while not military personnel himself, works as a civilian for the military.  His first comment was that there would be a LOT of people who would refuse to address the child by name if he were named Admiral, as it's an actual (earned) rank and he wouldn't have earned it.  Just as medical doctors have issues with addressing PhDs as "Doctor"(or even hearing others do so), military personnel have issues with someone claiming a rank they're not entitled to.  Frankly, it would be something of a slap in the face to those who HAVE earned their ranks, Admirals or others.

In more civilian terms, would you take seriously anyone named King, Princess, Duchess, Majesty, etc?  Or someone whose parents had named them Doctor or Professor?

Oh, don't worry about that.  We will definitely pick a name we both agree on, and it will NOT be Admiral.  Your responses are about what I expected.  I have to show this thread to DH.  Stick out tongue

I'm sure he hasn't thought about this, because I know the last thing he'd want is to disrespect anyone in the military.  We both come from families with strong military histories, and we both respect those who serve.

  • Not a fan.  I think of Admiral as a position of honor, not as a name, but maybe for a pet.

  • I went to college with an Admiral and he didn't have any problems. Admiral Charles doesn't flow well for me though; neither does the corny punchline "Most people have to work their entire lives to get that name - our kid could be born with it!"

LOL Chief Petty Officer Admiral _____.   Makes me think of that football player named Lawyer, as well.

My great aunt's husband had several relatives we know of who had different military rank names and my great uncle had the double whammy of being named Major (last name sounds like roads).  I always joke that the only name I will consider for any son is Captain since with our last name it is a really well-known fictional character.

  • Ummm... I'd tell DH he may use that as a nn if he likes, but that it's not going on a birth certificate. :P
