Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Small Vent: People Without Babies

We got a call from SIL this morning asking us if we could "get a sitter for tonight so that we could go out to dinner".  They want to go to a particular restaurant where a baby would understandably not be appreciated.  Plus, it's located all the way downtown which is a significant drive.

I love SIL and I understand that she doesn't have kids and therefore does not "get it" quite yet.  It's still annoying, though.  I called my parents and asked them if they would be interested in babysitting but they have plans, which is totally cool.  We don't really have anyone else available, though, because my parents are the only ones who have babysat him before and I don't want to go on a last minute search for someone else who can do it (I just wouldn't be comfortable with it).

If you want to go somewhere nice, give us a few days notice so that we can make the necessary arrangements.  We just can't be spontaneous like that anymore!

DH is calling her to see what she says about it.  Maybe they can come up with a place that's more "baby friendly".

I think that says it nicely.  You should just tell them that.

  • I would just tell her what you wrote. That you'd love to go to that restaurant but you need a few days to get a baby-sitter.

We have a set of very dear friends that just don't get that we can't meet them at a bar at 8pm for a drink....WITH our son. They are always suggesting places that are not appropriate. We finally just went to one of the places once to show them what we mean, and they totally got it. The place didn't even have high chairs, it was past DS's bedtime and no one really had a very good time. Now they give us 1-2 weeks notice, we get a sitter or go somewhere very casual, or hang at one of our houses.

  • My BIL always invites us to fancy restaurants and tell us to just bring the baby along.....at 8 at night. He totally doesn't get it lol. He will soon though because my SIL is pregnant! :)

  • I understand that people with babies don't always "get it", but I think it's nice that they still offer. There are lots of girls on here who are always talking about how their childless friends have completely ditched them. At least yours (even if it is SIL) are still trying to make plans. Ya know?

Maybe you could cut her a little slack, she'll understand some day. :)
