any tips on encouraging tummy time

My DS loved tummy time but DD is a totally different story.  The *second* she is put down on her tummy, she screams her head off.  We've tried different toys, getting down with her and talking to her, having DS get down and talk to her (she loves him so much I thought for sure this was the ticket), having 'modified' tummy time over our leg, on our tummy/chest, but tummy time = torture for her.

It's all we can do to get her to do 5 minutes (and that's spread over 5-10 attempts with a TON of protesting from her).

Any other tips would be appreciated :)

Re: any tips on encouraging tummy time

  • DS#1 hated tummy time, so we started with just a few minutes on our laps or chest (we would lay on the couch and he would lay on us on his tummy).  We were slowly able to increase time and transition SLOWLY to an activity mat on the floor.  We would have him do it for a few minutes even if he wasn't so pleased, and eventually he got used to it.  GL!

  • I've found that our DS hates tummy time on the floor but he doesn't resists as much if we put him on our bed I move our big fluffy comforter and put a thin fuzzy blanket down on it and he's much more content there he's not rolling or anything so I don't worry to much now i can see him from the recliner in our living room and we have a king sized bed but once he starts rolling we'll have to find something different.
  • We just started using the Boppy during Tummy Time yesterday and it has been a lifesaver!  I put her chest on the boppy and her legs go in the hole....kinda hard to explain.  She went from crying the whole time, to whining a little until she saw me with her.
  • We use a tummy time mat we got from walmart and it has been wonderful. It has a small cusion to place under her chest so she enjoys tummy time alot more now. Also my pedi said to let her whine during tummy time cause she  really needs this time.

Most babies dislike Tummy Time initially, so you're not alone!  But not only does TT help your baby avoid flat spots, it can prevent developmental delays by strengthening baby's neck, arms and core muscles.  Make sure you're offering TT at his most content time of day, and that you get down there with him on the floor.  Offer a favorite toy or baby-proof mirror because babies love faces.  Talk or sing to him to distract him.  For more tips on how to make it more enjoyable for both of you, visit the Pathways Awareness website at: https://bit.ly/8IhuuF.
