Zyrtec for babies?

My 7 mo has been terribly fussy and congested this past week, and my pedi is suspecting Cedar fever.  She told me I could give her zyrtec and benadryl (1/2 tsp each).  I really want my baby to feel better, and I know Cedar levels have been through the roof, but I hate the idea of giving meds to such a little one.  Especially since the box says for 2 yo or older.  :-/

Anyone have experience with Zyrtec and babies, and/or other remedies for me to try to help her feel better?

So far, this Cedar stuff is my least favorite part of living in Austin!  :-)

  • We gave Zyrtec to M when he was less than 7 months to help with an allergic rash.  Worked just fine for him.  My dh was concerned about it when he saw the box which said it was for 2 or older and called the pedi and talked to them about it and they said it was fine if you gave the proper dosage.

  • We've given a half teaspoon since my kids were really young. I don't love the idea of giving it to them regularly, but if we don't they end up with sinus infections and then we are talking about antibiotics, etc. I figure the allergy meds are the lesser evil. Cedar allergies are definitely my least favorite part of living in the hill country!

  • We gave DS Zyrtec (HEB brand) when he was 9 months old, I think based on his weight we gave him the 1/2 teaspoon and it worked great!  Poor kid was miserable and it really worked for him.
  • My baby turned 7 months on the 18th. I am giving him 1/4 teaspoon also. So far so good. I am giving at 1:00 AM so that he could have an active day.

My DS has been taking Zyrtec since he was about 15 mos old.  It's an allergy medication that works best when taken daily (like adult allergy meds).  He hasn't had any ill effects and his physician as well as our friend who is a pediatric allergist (MD) said it was safe.
