Post partum: pads/Depends? Help!

I'm trying to figure out what to bring to the hospital and what to have at home for after the birth. I saw some girly Depends at Target, should I get those?

What kind of pads specifically? There are so many kinds and brands and I've seriously never bought them before. Should I get a variety? Should they all have wings? Should I bring any to the hospital or keep them all at home? Thanks!

Re: Post partum: pads/Depends? Help!

  • it is really a personal preference.

i have never needed anything like depends. i have used the hospital bulky pads until i take a shower and then after that, i use a regular maxi pad that you would use for a period. i have had very easy vaginal deliveries with minimal tearing and bleeding.

i do get a ton of the maxi pads though and change them a little more often than i would for my period (i make a point to pee more to avoid infection right after delivery) and i get the ones with wings.

although it is gross at first and can seem overwhelming and totally insane to bleed that much and still be alive (that was my thought when i had my first) for me, it seems to slow after about 12 hours and gets lighter from there.

i hope that you have minimal and don't need depends... i couldn't imagine wearing one of those!

  • I picked up some CVS brand "super with wings" today because they were on sale... I will continue to stock up on different brands but I am always a fam of wings they just feel more secure.

  • I think I am going to wait until the hospital to see what my needs are and then go from there. Plus at the hospital you can stock up on what they have there for you anyways. Although any pads I buy will have wings. Pads w/o wings are useless.

ETA: Just remember I do have overnight pads with wings from always that I used to use with my period. My no BCP period was horrible and unpredictable so I will probably use those if I can and the ones that I stock up on from the hospital.

  • I only did overnight pads w/wings with my previous deliveries, and I learned that was NOT enough. (For me anyway, I bled like a stuck pig for a week and a half after!) I will need the depends. After that, I'll progress to overnights and adjust after that.

    I reccommend these:

  • I read a post a while ago on 0-3 months about what to get and a lot of them recommended Always Infinity overnight. I got 2 boxes of those. My friend said to crisscross them in a "narrow X" and they'll cover even more. I'm going to try that first and see where it takes me. I really don't want to wear thick pads or diapers.
  • I use depends for the first couple of days because I deliver at a birth center so no overnight stay or mesh undies. After that I switch to always overnight maxi w/ flexi-wings they are the ones wrapped in orange. Once I go thru those I switch to the always regular maxi w/wings they are wrapped in yellow.

  • I just came across your question and hope I am not too late.  If so, maybe others will see my response and it will be helpful.  First though, I will introduce myself:  My name is Elaine and I am the Always and Tampax Community Manager and a Registered Nurse.  Many years ago, I was a labor and delivery nurse - one of my favorite jobs ever.

Always Infinity is the product I know the most about and therefore would recommend it for postpartum protection.  The Infinity pad is very thin and flexible.  Despite its thin appearance, it provides women with great protection.  Along with that, the Infinity allows women the ability to move easily and it absorbs great.

It is different from other pads and the women who use it say the Always Infinity is wonderful.
Below is a link to a page that will show you more about the features and benefits of this pad.  Note the free sample offer on the page too.  Take care and I hope everything is going well for you.
