When did you turn off the monitor at night? I'm thinking that it will be a better nights sleep for us as we won't hear every moan and groan but will still hear him when he wakes in the morning. But of course, I feel a little guilty/nervous about not having it on. Have you discontinued the monitor yet!?
Re: Turn off the monitor?
I leave mine on the lowest setting still overnight and then mute it when he starts babbling in the morning (since he's right nextdoor to our room). I figure that way I won't miss it if he needs something overnight, and the small noises don't tend to wake me up especially if my "good ear" is down on the pillow.
We haven't and won't for awhile. DD still wakes frequently at night. We tried CIO for 2 weeks in which she cried for up to several hours each night....so it was a total failure. After that experience, I don't have any desire to just let her cry all night long.
What about just turning down the volume? That way you would hear if he's really upset and not the minor noises.

Honestly, if I could only have the monitor on for the night OR the day, I'd pick the night. I need the monitor to hear if she's starts crying at night if something's wrong. Otherwise, I can't hear her from my room and it's only 20 feet away from me.
I do as a PP said and turn it on mute if she wakes up in the morning and starts babbling.
I think we turned the sound off at 5 months. That's when her cry got loud enough to hear through our shared wall.
The white noise we have in her room makes me BSC.
We leave the video monitor on all night.
We don't have one in our room anymore. DS is just down the hall and even with the door closed I can hear him. We moved into a new house just before Thanksgiving where we are now all on the 2nd floor. In our old house, DH & I were on the 1st floor with DS upstairs so I had a video monitor and even then I have the volume as low as it would go and the video off. If he made a noise or I just wanted peace of mind I'd turn the video on to check him.
We do use the monitor now when DS is in bed and we are in our basement where we watch TV at night, otherwise I'd never hear him.
I should mention also though that 1. I'm a light sleeper so I know that I'll wake if he cries during the night and 2. DS has always been a great sleeper so it is extremely rare for me to have to get up during the night with him.
