Pregnant after a Loss

When did you stop sleeping in your belly & back?

I always liked sleeping on my belly the most. From the middle of 1st tri-the end of 1st tri it got kind of uncomfortable because of on and off cramps/stretching/adjustments/whatever was going on in there. I basically have weened myself off of sleeping on my stomach, though sometimes I really want to! I've read a bunch of stuff that says it doesn't hurt the baby at this point.

I do still sleep on my back a little bit. Mostly I'm sleeping on my sides but sometimes it gets too uncomfortable. I heard it's good to stop this around 16 weeks because it can interfere with breathing?

What are your thoughts/when did you go to strictly sleeping on your sides??

Re: When did you stop sleeping in your belly & back?

  • Whenever it got uncomfortable enough to wake me up.

So for belly, almost right away between the Lovenox bruises and the m/s.

Back became uncomfortable in the last two weeks or so. My OB told me not to buy into that whole "interferes w/ breathing" thing. He said your body will let you know way in advance before you could possibly do harm to yourself or baby.

  • Thank you SO much for asking this question!!!  I'm a total tummy sleeper, & want to do it as long as it's not going to hurt the LO...

I'm really interested in what more experienced mommas have to say!

  • I stopped sleeping on my belly and back around 7:45a this morning when the alarm clock went off.

I figure my body will tell me when I should move.

Thanks! This is goooood to hear :)

  • I start out on my side but sometimes end up on my stomach.  I always wake up when it's uncomfortable and just switch to my side again.

  • I stopped sleeping on my belly when I was about 12 weeks because it became uncomfortable and hurt my back.  I now find myself waking up on my back even though I start out on my side.  Right now when I wake up and I'm on my back I just change positions.  I try not to worry too much about this.
  • I've never been much of a back sleeper so I've honestly managed to avoid that this whole time...however, I LOVE to sleep on my stomach. I have to tell you, I've found a way to sleep with a pillow between my thighs that allows me to still sleep about "halfway" on my stomach. As far as I know, it doesn't hurt LO. I didn't have to stop sleeping completely on my stomach til around 20ish weeks b/c it wasn't uncomfortable. Side-sleeping is SO uncomfortable.

  • My OB told me I could sleep on my tummy until it was uncomfortable... As of right now I am sleeping half on my side but leaning on my belly.  She also said that I could sleep on my back until it was uncomfortable too... She said that my body will let me know when I need to stop.  She also said not to worry about it... and just sleep.

  • Don't worry about it. And it's not going to affect your breathing. What is can affect is blood flow, since back sleeping can put pressure on the vena cava at a certain point. But like others have said, your own comfort level will indicate when that point would be. You will feel uncomfortable before you could put your baby in any harm.
  • I'm still sleeping on both my back and stomach. If I sleep on my stomach for a long period of time, it gets a bit crampy, so I've been trying to stop. However, I just roll on top of the pillow and end up on my stomach anyway. I don't know what I'm going to do!

  • Sleeping on my belly became uncomfortable pretty early, so I stopped that maybe around 9 or 10 weeks.  Sleeping on my back became uncomfortable when the rhinitis started (perpetually stuffy and drippy nasal passages) which was around 12 or 13 weeks.  It became hard to breath when I was on my back, so I've been exclusively a side sleeper since 2nd tri started, but not because of the "interferes with breathing" thing, just out of comfort.

  • I am still sleeping on my back. I figured I would keep doing it until it gets uncomfortable, and so far, it's still okay. :)
