VBAC

Did you/will you call hospitals in your area and ask about their vbac policies?

I am attempting to make my plans for #2 (TTC next month) and my friend suggested I call the hospital L&D and ask any questions I have.  Do you plan on calling your hospital/birth center to ask about vbac policies?  I never knew to do this.

  • You can call the hospitals and ask about their % VBAC attempts and % VBAC successes.  They SHOULD have this information.  I did not do this because it depends on who you get on the phone and is very unreliable.  ICAN has a complete list on their website that you can check.  I knew that the hospital where I delivered DS has a HORRIBLE reputation for pretending to be VBAC friendly and then forcing a repeat CS.  I was with midwives for my first birth but they couldn't attend a VBAC birth at the hospital.  They referred me to a midwife at a different hospital who had a 75% success rate with VBACs.  You can't beat that.

I find third party referrals tend to be more reliable than asking the hospital outright how they are on an issue.

    where did u find this!!?

  • I did a little research online and found out that there is only one hospital in my area that will even do VBAC at all.  I think it would be more helpful to talk to your individual doctor about VBAC policies than call up the hospital and ask.

I agree.  I think they best way to get info is to talk to women who have VBACd or doulas who support VBACing mamas.  They sort of have an insight that you won't get from talking to the receptionist, nurse, or doc.

  • I e-mailed both hospitals in our area for VBAC success (patient representatives), VBAC policies, c/s rates, etc.  One was fabulously helpful, and sent me to the head L&D nurse which gave me all the information I requested (I'm going there, for various reasons, including their high VBAC rate).  The other was like pulling teeth and I never got a straight answer from. At the hospital I am going to go to I also set up a tour and asked more questions when I was there.

My FP doctor practices at both (she's handling my pg this time around) and has been very helpful about telling me the policies for VBACs at the hospitals, as well, so if you have access to a doctor who practices at more than one, that may be another route to go if you can't get good answers from the hospitals themselves.

    Good luck!

  • I just asked my OB if he would do VBAC's.  I think our hospital pretty much just relies on the OB on-call.  I won't agree to a c/s unless my OB says it's best (I only had 1st c/s because one twin was breech).
