Matching Birthmarks = ID

My di/di girls have matching red areas between their eyes, on the backs of their heads and at the base of their necks that have been there since birth.  They don't always look ID, different head shapes but I am wondering if this could be a sign.  Any ideas?

 TIA

Re: Matching Birthmarks = ID

  • I think those are stork marks, and they are probably just genetic (inherited from you or your husband) and not necessarily an indication that they're ID.  But I am not the pro on this one!

  • I don't think head shape can help you identify ID or Fraternal...My girls have different headshapes and they are ID.  I think depending on who's where in the womb can squish things differently.

Also, my girls have different birthmarks.  If you google birthmarks and ID twins, you'll find out there are even categories of twins (like mirror twins, for example, where the twins have mirror imaged birth marks).  B also has 2 hemangiomas and A does not.

  • Thanks!  I know I have a mark on my back that is similar.  I just thought it was strange that they had the same marks in the same places.

  • Well they look ID! : )

Our Mary has recently gotten what looks like a small birth mark on her leg, but Grace doesn't have one. They do have similar small red dots between their eyes though.

  • Ok the picture didn't come through for some reason when I replied...

    They look ID to me!

Write a new post asking if they look ID, and ask PeaKay (our resident expert) to weigh in... post a couple of pics.

  • Oh holy cow, they're adorable! And they definitely look a lot alike, but I'm not sure about birthmarks being genetic. Certainly head shape can be different between IDs.

Post some more pics and I'll give you my opinion. :)

  • The marks are called "stork bite" or "angel's kiss." More than half of babies have them at birth. They fade before their a year old, usually after a few months. My girls are unquestionably fraternal and both had a stork bite on the right eyelid and on the back of the neck. I think its just coincidence that your girls have them too.

That being said, your girls do look identical to me....and adorable :)

  • My guys are ID and one has a birth mark and one doesnt.
  • My I'D twins were born with different stork bites on the back of their neck, and one of the only ways to tell them apart when they were small was a small red mark above Tessa's lip that has since faded almost entirely. I would say that birth marks aren't necessarily a good way to tell if they're ID, although they look it to me :)

  • No clue about birthmarks but your girls look ID for sure!

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • I agree that they look identical.  I also agree that those are common stork bites that you are seeing.  All of my kids have/had them.  My ID twin girls both have birthmarks and they are not in the same places.

  • Well, they look ID to me but my IDs each have different birthmarks.
  • Thanks everyone!  I posted a bunch of pics a few weeks ago and the responses were mixed.  Sometimes they look ID sometimes they don't.  I think I am just going to have to get them tested.  Smile  Do you all have any info on how I would go about getting them tested?

    Thanks again!

  • I was online looking up matching birthmarks and came across this, I had to sign up just to comment! My two sons ages 4yrs and 4 months have the same birthmarks as your kids! From birth they had red spot betweent he eyes (my 4yr old's spot eventually faded, as did the one on the back of his head) you can really see it when they cry, all of them get so red! A spot on the back of the head, and a larger one at the base of the skull or top part of the back of the neck. My 4 yr old still has this. His grandmother had the same marks and she still has the one on the back of her neck too. They sayd they normally fade by about 5 yrs of age, but some are they to stay.

My very obviously fraternal b/g twins have almost identical stork bites/angel kisses.
